God invented sex... God thinks you should have as much sex as you want.

God invented s. for inside of marriage....

Fornication (before marriage) or adultery (having s. with someone other than your spouse)... leads to hurt.

YHWH gave us guidelines...

obedience brings blessings

disobedience brings destruction.

I'm thinking someone doesn't feel like ponying up for a Valentine's Day gift, while most of us wish we had that problem...

God knows me (well) and knows my intentions (even better than I do), so I think He would be quite happy to see me make others smile and feel loved.

Valentine's Day is an attempt to cash in on our feelings of love and guilt about the person we love. We like to think that a box of chocolates or a card will undo all the hurt caused by an absent or cold love. It doesn't.

As for not celebrating anything with a pagan root: give it up. It can't be done. Christianity as a movement was born in a pagan world and will always have pagan roots. Strip away the pagan roots and you will not have much left that is authentically Christian.
HI Seattle! My name is Lisa, and I grew up in Kent, WA. Nice to see someone from home. As for your definition of Valentines Day, I ask you to look up "Lupercalia". That is actualy the orign of "Valentines" Day. As for your claim that it isn't possible to discard paganism from our lives, I must remind you that it is possible, because Yahua GOD commanded it.

You are right however; Much of "Christianity" by traditional definition, is saturated with Paganism. So ask yourself, ask Yahua (GOD),what do you need to do to acheive pagan free, worship of Yahua GOD? What do you need to do,to rid your lifeof pagan practices,to give honor to Yahushua(jesus christ), the savior of your soul?

I have been on this path, and I want to encourage you that it is possible to live a life of faith in Yahushua (jesus christ), without paganism.

I think I have to point out that the origins of St. Valentines Day are unclear at best. Saints days are celebrated on the day of that saints death, many scholars believe it may be a coincedental that this fesival and valentines day coincide. There are a few different theories to how this feast day gained it's romantic association. But my favorite is that it's the day that all the birds choose their mates.

I assume that the mod is protestant and several here are as well. Now I'm not a protertant but I'm going to suggest that a more sound theological reason for you to reject St. Valentines day is that it is based in the veneration of a saint and your doctrine denounces this.

I don't want to make ungrounded assumptions, I'm more familair with the protestantism of the 15th-17th century.

Someone's been reading too many Jack Chick tracts, and not enough history.

Though I do feel that Valentine's Day (as well as ALL other major holidays) has become little more than a commercial morass.

Yes...next thing you know, they will be telling us that Halloween is a Satanic holiday.

Commercialization has robbed all holidays of their original meaning. But then again, so has Christianization. After the Roman empire became Christianized, the people were not about to give up their festivals. Therefore, the previously "pagan" festivals merely received a Christian face lift. If people actually believe that Christmas and Easter are endorsed by the Bible, they need to dust that thing off and explore between the binding in further detail. However, the festivals, or "holidays," are basically harmless diversions (including Halloween and Valentine's Day), except to my pocketbook.

If people actually believe Christmas is about "baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger," they are grossly out of touch with reality. It is about making a Faustian bargain with Mastercard, so my relatives can have more stuff they don't need.

And yes...The sensationalistic Chick tracts are the most amusing, and they usually have the predominant theme that the Roman Catholic Church is behind every evil and every conspiracy in the world. And somehow, Jack Chick completely misses the fact that Protestants were equally responsible for the bloodletting that occured during the Reformation and "Age of Religious Wars." It was not merely a "return to scriptures and simplicity of the early church" on the part of Protestants. "Protestants" massacred their Anabaptist brethren for their refusal to accept Infant Baptism. However, where is Infant Baptism in the Protestant rallying cry of sola scriptura (scripture alone)?

But, like Rush Limbaugh who completely overlooks, or whitewashes, Republican evils; Jack Chick, either out of ignorance or selectivity, completely overlooks Protestant evils during this turbulent period of history.

I don't have any use for the Chick tracts either - many Protestants don't. Many of us celebrate Valentine's Day, too.

I think most people are capable of making a distinction between a bacchanalian orgy and the exchange of greeting cards.
