O most holy apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, people honor and invoke you universally as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of. Pray for me, for I am so helpless and alone. Please help to bring me visible and speedy assistance. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (state your request) and that I may praise God with you always.

Say this prayer 9 times then follow with 3 Our Fathers, 3 Hail Marys and 3 Glorias
Do this for 9 days to complete the novena and your prayers will be answered in some way.
The novena has never been known to fail.

Every prayer is "answered in some way", just not always the way we expect. I've seen these before, but being Protestant, don't participate. Is this something most Catholics still do? I'd thought not, from the ones I know. How do the rest of you feel about it?

Here is some info on what a novena actually is. It get's misused significantly by those who think that somehow God will grant their wish if they follow the novena recipe.

The idea is that a novena provides a method of spiritual focus. The Apostles prayed for the nine days between Ascension and Pentecost. Hence the nine day spiritual focus. The idea is toreflect on a particular need, and focus yourself usinga particular set of prayers. It's fine to repeat a prayer nine times....but the idea is to reflect....not to go over it nine times as fast as you can thinking that satisfies some contrived regulation God has in place. There is no special correct prayer, but many are written to help if you prefer to use one already written

The tradition of asking a saint to pray for us is the same as asking a living Christian to pray for us. Jude's letter dealt with persecution and encouragement in hopeless situations. It's assumed he was martyred and I think his body is entombed in St Peter's in Rome. So he is associated with those who struggle with very difficult challenges in their life.

From a Catholic persepctive..at least an orthodox view...this is another tool usedto grow infaith. Novenas are very much in use especially in the homes of those who immigrated and brought thier cultural traditions here to this country

Thanks for the thoughtful response, vinman. That clarifies it for me quite a bit. I think Protestants can learn a lot from Catholics aboutforms ofprayer - not repetition for repetition's sake, as you rightly say; but as an aid to reflection and focus. There are a lot ofvital traditions there that have enriched the spiritual lives of thousands, and those of us on the Protestant side of the family should try to learn more and benefit more than we often do. I've done some reading in the last year on lectio divina, for example, and I find it helpful and interesting.

I have a Good Report on using a Novena. My soninlaw had a season in his business in which he had... no work. After some months of this, he and his wife began a novena. Every day for 56 days they prayed. At the end to that time, he got work. That was years ago now, and he has never never been without jobs again. Even now with this slow down, he has new jobs coming in. He has not forgotten to keep praying!

Here is another novena for finding a husband:
Oh most beautiful flower of mount carmel, fruitful vine, slendor of heaven. Blessed mother of the son of God; Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh star of the sea, help me and show me you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity. (Virgin Mary, please bring total clarity to my heart and mind regarding the man who should be my partner and husband. Please guide me infallibly towards the right man, and guide him to me as well. I surrender my will to the will of God and ask that you intervene on my behalf and clear my confusion completely, Amen). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to the (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this prayer in your hands (3 times). Amen. Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days and then publish it and it will be granted to you.

Me, I just told God that I was too stupid to know what I need, I ended up moving to another state, and the most wounderfull person you could imangen walked into my life. It looks to me like it is sopose to be some majcal formula to make God do what I want in stade of just taking him at his word. So far as praying to the sants I don't know any of them, but I do know Jesus so why would I go thrue some one I don't know to get to someone I do know?
