Just for the record, Atheism isn't a claim to be open-minded or accept homosexuality. Despite whatever religious reasons you have against homosexuality there are also logical reasons that don't support it. This fact doesn't necessarily reflect my beliefs in homosexuality in any way, I believe that would be a different forum. But to me this sounds like a little rant on atheists based on your experiences with one or two people. That's a nono. No two people are the same and categorizing a person into the "atheist" category doesn't give you the right to say what you said in your second patagraph. Sounds to me like you had a run in with some asses who happened to be atheist. Believe me there are plenty of those that happen to be other things too.

Ahh, and not to be mean or anything but your last paragraph shows how little you understand the viewpoints of many other religions. Think about muslims in the U.S. since 9/11. Try sticking to a way of life that many closed minded people associate with terrorism.

Just wondering if anyone here knows that one can be Athiest and Buddhist at the same time?

Yes... Actually Buddhism as a religion/philosophy is agnostic at it's core with no belief in a supreme being. Therefore, the "religious" impulse has led many of Buddha's followers to deify him in order to fill what Augustine once called the "god shaped vacuum" in each of us. And I guess that's a question we need to ask ourselves upon deeper introspection; who or what do we deify in our own lives? After all, something needs to fill the "vacuum".
Whoa whoa whoa there missy, (or was it mister? I can't remember). But please do not speak of agnosticism and atheism as if they were the same thing. They are not in the least. And the answer is no, one cannot be buddhist and atheist at the same time. That is like saying my right arm is a left arm, and literally meaning it. It's contradictory. It's true that buddhismdoes not always have a god like figure involved, but if you believe the teachings...any sect of the teachings, then you are buddhist, not atheist. Especially since Ibelieve the goal of buddhism is "nirvana" which is essentially the escape from our immortality (cycle of reincarnation) that can only be achieved through enlightenment...definitely NOT an atheistic view.

Now it is definitely possible to think alot of the teaching are interesting and thevalues are cool, and still be atheist. Personally,I've always considered buddhism the only religion for me if I wasn't atheist.

This is a true story. A woman I used to date who is an atheist saw a Nativity display. She took one look at it, scoffed and said "That is so gay." Now, this is a woman who has a brother that is gay. Personally, I don't like comments like this because I think they are stupid and insensitive towards gay people. But what really strikes me is listening to so many of these atheists in the world who claim to be "open-minded" and "tolerant" yet they're the first ones to barge into your forum, your church or ministry shouting out at you because you're religious or spiritual. Yep, verrrry open-minded alright.

I also love it when they preach about the First Amendment and how it applies to them and their rights yet somehow that same privilege doesn't extend to those of us who believe that there is Freedom of Religion in the Constitution. Oh, sure, they don't mind if we pray out loud or silently. Just as long as we do it inside with the doors locked and so nobody outdoors can hear anything.

I'm not interested in converting anyone and I learned long ago that it was pointless and futile to even try it. But can somebody explain to me why some people feel it is their God-given right or science-given right to personally attack religious people for their beliefs? For some reason it's mostly the Christians that get attacked and very seldom is it any other religious group although they get attacked, too. If you don't like religion, fine. But coming to a religious message board or website to litter it with anti-religious propaganda and hate speech says more about you than anything you could ever say or think about religion and spirituality.

You are the ones always telling people how open-minded and tolerant you are. Prove it.
I know exactly what you mean. I met this group of christians. Seemed like nice folk. Til they put on their white hoods and had a meeting around a burning cross.

That taught me to not like ALL christians.

I've had similar experiences as Steve with fundie atheists. What they agree on is that they have no need to defend their positions, their beliefs, their ideas. But everyone else must Question this orthodoxy and first you will be mocked, secondly you will be shunned and finally you will be excommunicated. Give them enough power and no doubt they would be fanning the flames in their desire to rid the world of those who do not share their orthodoxies.

..... The most hurtful and destructive people in my life have been the noisy defenders of the one true faith: their own.
No matter what form it comes in .... when the system becomes more important than relationship it can be a distructive force.

Are you talking about Atheists as a whole? You have met every single Atheist that has every walked the face of the earth to come to this conclusion? Just curious. You make a comparison of ALL Atheists to a very specific type of Christian. Why is that?

Some adherents to the Jewish faith consider themselves atheists.

not to attack anybody if i can, never being tought about god or believing what i heard that was my free choice, as in the bible god gave us fredom of choice, growing up most of what i heard about christyanity made no sence, most of who a hung around with were of the same choice thinking that i was, i use the frase free choice as it puts no lables on you , like the free choice to belive in the cristein god or for that matter any other god or order of things, as i grew older i wanted to know what all this was about a man called jesus, well using a free mind and open to what the bible says it all came into place, [not realy that simple b ut im trying to keep this short] in my studys ive found it all fits together, science, evolution religion can all work together, i mean come on even the church has to admit the earth is round and so with everything else as we learn more and more of are working we will find this to be true, as a person of science you would have to admit that we arnt the top of the latter, there is so much out ther above us, so why coulndnt there be a god as the bible says the term atheist is a religious term , i dont understand it even though i was once labled it myself, im still a free thinker and allwasy will be,
