They exist as a reflection of the consciousness that created them and to have a symbolic reference for a higher power within a limited framework of awareness so that the the mind can comprehend an experiential state of being

Unfortunately, the Church has been very guilty of many atrocities in the past, notwithstanding the recent times and especially the male church leaders.... but so have many royal families and governments....

Atrocities arent just the domain of the Church, but one would expect that religious leaders teaching good human traits to others would not be hypocritical and doing the very opposite to what they are teaching others..... not all of course, but enough to tarnish the name of those religious people who epitomise what they are teaching (the good traits)....

But that is beside the point....

Religion has been a way to unify people like nothing else can -- fear is a great motivator.... everyone has the fear of the unknown.... well mostly everyone.... and religion uses this fear to make people believe....

On a side note, what I find most interesting about the New Age thinking, is that it derives some of its message from Christianity.....
Zana,

I agree that Church History doesn't play well. The Catholic Church during the Middle Ages, The Crusades, churches today using the abuse of Power and status. in the name of an almighty God...Priest that have abused young boys ....Pastors that have abused young girls & women...Moslem children strapped with bombs ready to die for Allah with the hope of a better life in heaven....the list goes on and on...

So...if fear is a great motivator and unifier of religions and these examples certainly denote fear....why would anyone want to sign up for this treatment? Especially in the name of a God or Creator?

Your 8000 years old conapiracy theory really doesn't work well. I agree that most religious institutions have been about control of the masses and trying to exploit them and their weaknesses. The fundamental weakness in most people is a fear of death. We don't want to think about dying or not existing in some way. So we create gods who never die and hope that they will pass it on to us. It is this fear of death that the clery and churches and immans etc have been able to exploit over the centuries.
This is a very old thread, but I wanted to respond and encourage other’s who might have some input to add to it.

I get that fear of death can be a great motivation, but a lot of Christians aren’t afraid to die. And the way I understand is that you don’t get to be with God immediately. Everybody dies and then get’s judged and then we go to Heaven or Hell so there is a long waiting period after death for most of us. What happens in between I don’t know?

But, I’m not afraid of death. Don’t get me wrong I don’t want to die but I’m not afraid of it either.

As far as why religion was created I really don’t know. I was taught that the church isn’t a physical place as much as it is a body of believers. Some Christians say there are a ton of religions because Satan is trying to deceive people.

I think the notion of unity scares people. If we were to all agree then we would lose our individuality. I’m not fully convinced that a little self examination of our beliefs individually or collectively is a bad thing. Killing people who disagree with you is bad.

I find thrides like this interesting because it is like the old saying of opions they are like a**** every one has one and most stink. so often their is no logic behind the arguments presented and no thought eather. most are formed on scanty back groun and usly a restatment of what some oneelse has said.
It is obious that religon serves some neer to the mind and soul of humans or they would not have lasted so long. When explorers and missionarys go to the most remote places in the world they find religon of some sort. Is fear of death a part of it? yes but it is more then that, is it an explation of the unknowen? Could be, but even when some thing is clearly disproven people still cling to it. (Anyone seen Elvis latly?) Is religon used to control people? Well how about Japan and empiour worship, or the religon of Egypt? Clearly these were to control people, like Hitler. Is religon used to make money? To often.
If there so many fakes in the world what are they trying to fake, Why would some one coppy some thing that is foney?
All religons that I know of assume that God is angry and must be appesed. If it is not a god then it is a demon, or some other spirit. All religons except one contains a list of rules, dos and don't to please this angry beeing.
Man needs God to give his life meaning, some thing to hold on to, man seeks happyness, and pourpouse. some thing to make life worth living. I submit that what ever you have that fills thoes offices are your god and religon, what ever it is.
Christanity is the only religon that assumes that you can not please God by you reffords and provides an alturnitie way
