I hear a lot of government controlling aspects of our lives.

Anyone want to give examples in concrete everyday occurrences.

Hmm.....I know every Sunday I am not allowed to purchase a case of beer in my home state. I also could not buy a car on Sundays if I wanted to.

So that's an example of church and state coming together to mess up my Sundays.

There are very few countries in the world that can operate without taxes. The US is not one of them.

Correct. But they are out of control. Serfs used to pay 25% of their income to their king/lord. Many of us pay upwards of 40%. What does that make us?

We have the same law preventing the sale of alcohol on Sunday. I cannot say that I have ever needed to buy alcohol on a Sunday though. That might be the only way that I am like a boy scout in that I am always prepared with a stocked bar.

We don't have any restrictions on car sales however.

I do know that a huge majority of package store owners are OK with remaining closed on Sundays. If others were open then they would have to open as well or risk losing some customers. Many did not want the change from 8PM to 9PM closing time.

Pretty minor stuff really.

Doesn't exactly fit under the heading of concrete.

The thing is if you want 'everyday' examples these are pretty much all going to be 'minor stuff'. However,,,,when there are a multitude of these little things piled on top of each other it all adds up. I also wouldn't say it's so much 'control' as limiting or restricting. Little things such as being required to wear a seat belt when I drive a car to only being allowed to put up certain types of fence around my house, or being required to buy health insurance. Though, on the bright side there certainly are countries that control people much more than in the U.S.

There was somewhere (I think Missouri) that had the car lot owners petition the state to keep the no selling cars on Sunday law. Assures them that everyone gets a day off without competitors sneaking an extra day in.

Imagine if there were no Blue Laws: One Sunday I am on a beer run, my truck has catastrophic engine failure next to a car lot, I need beer, I'm not walking (don't want to risk that public intox arrest) and there are no taxis in my home town.......what to do? Well go buy a new car and finish the beer run.....the car lot sells a car (we all know they need the sales), the liquor store sells at least a case of beer (I support small businesses), and I get my beer.....everyone wins! (and in hard economic times, staying closed on Sundays is just bad business)
