Why do people like to make fun of and personally denigrate political figures? Media types, other politicians as well as people you meet in everyday life will do this type of thing. Rather than address the ideas or policies a politician supports they simply attack or make fun of the person. My question is....why do people do this? Also, can you think of examples across the political spectrum that this happens to?

With ordinary people it is usually jealousy. With politicians I think it is just politics. What I mean is it seems there isn't a real difference between the two parties. They both spend too much, they both tax too much, they both ignore the middle class. So if you want to show a difference you attack the person.

The practice of name calling, trash talking and ad hominem character attacks of political figures is as old as politics itself - for example, Thomas Jefferson was accused of being the antichrist by his political rivals. We often like imagine that there was a time in our history when politics was at least somewhat more civil and productive when in fact the opposite is true. Like war, politics has always been an ugly, nasty and filthy dirty business. Chalk it up to human nature I guess and the fact that, as a species, we still have a long way to evolve yet (socially, culturally, etc.).

I have this neet book called The best Prepartion For the CLAST on pages 186 and 187 is a list of invalid aruguments. onfe is ab hominem, aganst the person. that is what you are talking about. Why do people do it? One is party politicks, "I am your opponit therefore you are wrong and I am right." I must be seen as you opinit, if I agreed with you I, or the people I suport, would not get elected. A nothere is that they realy don't have an argument aganst the policy but can't say that. The third is they think that we are stupid and don't know what they are doing. The founding fathers beleaved that resonable people given all the facts will make resonable choiches. The truth is that we are not all reasanable all the time but we would have a better chance if the people who's job it is informed us and stop playing selly power games./

I see it happen here from time to time in Oz. I think it because the polly concerned puts him or herself in a position subject to denigration and person attack.

We held our Federal Election yesterday.

During the Election Campaign, one of the ALP members is said to have openly mocked the parent of a disabled child. That is appalling behaviour and the MP deserved to lose his Seat in yesterday's Election.

That is one example of what I mean when I write that sometimes it happens because of the behaviour or comments chosen by that polly.

Or was your thread more around why do members of the government or public seem to delight in the opportunity to throw stones at political figures we don't like?
