I am pleased that the Dems are getting the message out about their push to smart capital investment within the public sector.

This is the first direct approach to making government more efficient that I have ever seen.

Am looking forward to seeing them run with it.

(Oh... & who doesn't love John Boehner?)

I love him because he is so consistently ridiculous! Just glad I live in the land of Carl Levin, not John Boehner.

You mean the orange man?!

Yes, he is almost as entertaining as Sharron Obtuse-Angle, and that ol' standby, Bible Spice!

This just irritates me.

The Democrats are always supporting the public sector in expense of the private.

Government workers...although have had some cutbacks (many NONE) are not the ones suffering. The PRIVATE sector is suffering and it's the private sector that creates jobs, not the public.

In CA, if you are a public sector employee you have hit gold. Outrageous retirement, great salary and benefits...un matched in the private sector world all on the backs of those of us in the private sector who are being forced to pay for this largesse when we ourselves are so much poorer.

Of course the Democrats support this because the government unions are at the top of their donation list. Who cares about the private sector, right? Let's just tax them more and more to pay for the high salaries of the government workers!

One more reason I cannot vote Democratic anymore. I am so tired of government unions calling the shots bedamed how bad the rest of the populace is suffering.

It just shows Democrats know nothing about jumpstarting an economy.
All they know is to tax more and give to their union buddies. That's it.

The capital investment has a way of returning dividend & minimizing future expenses for taxpayers as a whole.

A concentrated effort toward exportation & manufacturing development is also part of the shift that this administration is pushing.

The Repubs prefer the very short-term bandaids that make people think that things are getting better when in fact they may not be improving for the huge majority of the population.

Just like home ownership, if you plan to stay in that home, then it is a very, very good idea to make improvements that lower costs over the long haul. Government buildings & equipment should be dealt with in a similar manner. We, as a people, plan to be living here for quite some time.

Those are short term & are not the main focus of the administration. Those are bare minimum measures to get by while substantial systemic changes can take place.

It takes patience to reap benefits of a long-term approach. This nation lacks that which is why gov't throughout our lifetimes has given in to it & opted for the quickest way to make the people feel better. That leaves big holes for the future. President Obama says it well when he says that they can't kick the can down the road any longer. Too many things have been ignored just so that people can "feel" good in the present.

We need to manufacture & innovate here. It is very clear that there is a push to maximize exports & minimize imports. Michigan is a good example of a government that is making strides in revamping manufacturing. Jennifer Granholm is definitely on a mission there. Too bad they had to hit rock bottom first.

So then what are they doing for the long term? What are they doing to increase manufacturing?

To the OP,

From past discussions you know that we are on opposite ends of the political spectrum, but I too am scratching my head on this one. I'd also like to know what the dems are doing to improve manufacturing and exports. There are several free trade agreements waiting for Congressional approval such as ones with South Korea and Columbia, and these would definitely help us create jobs and improve our exports. The dems won't even take these bills up. Today Robert Gibbs said he didn't know when congress might act on these.

There are countless measures being taken to push nanotech, biotech, energy tech, & many other efficiency related ventures forward.

The right wants to go back to older means of manufacturing but this administration is pushing big advancement in efficiency as well as safety.

Making government buildings & public housing less costly by improving their efficiency will be clear long-term investment that should have been done long ago.
