We are having a State Election today and of course, a lot of the talk at the workplace turned to Politics. (Voting is compulsory in Oz.)

I found it very difficult to clearly express why I prefer the Liberal Party of Australia, over any other political party. In the end, it came down a combination of comfort (it is how my ancestors have voted) and ease of understanding the LPA beliefs. They are clearly listed on their website and they do happen to be beliefs I share.

But, I was not expecting to find it difficult to convey this. If you were asked, could you clearly explain why one Party (regardless of your country of residence) speaks more strongly to you than any other?

Yes.

- I should not pay the magnitude of tax I pay.

- Those who receive benefit receive too much, and do an insufficient amount of work.

I can explain every view I hold, long after any listener will fall asleep, cut off their ears, or go crazy.

Yep! I can The way I look at it, buck up, suck up, and don't expect to be taken care of. Quality of life is something you earn and not a basic right! You want a better life, get off your hind end and do something about it! That doesn't mean taking money from others to support your lifestyle, that means earning it yourself to get what you deem 'necessary'. Get the skills, education, and motivation to make something of yourself as you are not owed anything in this world!
Yes, I will admit to being somewhat conservative. Just how I was raised... you earn what you get in this world. "Free handouts" always come with strings.

No, I couldn't.

I can usually see all kinds of sides. I freely cross party lines; have all my life, and probably always will. My vote is the Kiss of Death; I hardly ever vote for a winner.

I am interested, though, in what your penalties are. Fines or jail? Or community service?

Ah yes, that would be me with work. I am well and truly capable of boring everyone about my job!

So, do the two statements you listed belong to a specific Party? Or are you a swing voter and adapt to the Party which is making the most sense to you at that time?

The bolded bit ... I am always saying stuff like this to my colleagues. Especially 'the world does not owe you' piece.

Kiss of Death?! Bahahahahaha!

The fine is $20 and if I don't pay it, then I may have prosecution proceedings instigated against me. If it goes to court, and I am found guilty, I will be fined $50 and have to pay the court costs.

We have an Electoral Roll here. Once you turn 18, you have to register and every time you change address, you have to update the Electoral Roll. If you are not registered on the Electoral Roll, the Government can still track you via Centrelink, ATO (Aussie Taxation Office).

I moved into a brand new home recently, the AEC (Aussie Electoral Commission) chased me for ages to get my registration details ... then they sent a letter addressed to me by name, no longer 'To The Householder' .. they had got my name from the local council or electricity company, I forget which now. I must have filled in and mailed that stupid form four times!

That's a good question, since parties have broad based support and narrower platforms that do not reflect the diversity of beliefs within: i.e. pro choice and log cabin Republicans, Catholic and wealthy Democrats (US).

It is easier to explain one's position by specific candidate.

Should we ever break the all or nothing electoral vote system apart and make room for third and fourth party seats in Congress, then American political life will get a lot more interesting.

Of course, that may happen after our Congress breaks this country with 14T in debt, and an entitlement system which sucks up 60% of income, which itself comes from only 1/3 of the income tax paying population.

How stupid can our government get? Protect us from enemies without and keep the peace within, clean the water and provide a system of rational justice, but don't play God with individual lives.

Liberal Democrat, because I believe human beings are entitled to a certain level of exsistence because they are human beings.

To the original question, yes. Yes I could.

My political preference will never be elected. How many Anarchists of my particular stripe ever get elected? *grin* Meri, I usually end up getting weird looks when I say things like "The only one responsible for your actions is you... The rest of the world can't be responsible *for* you!" So I hardly ever say things like that.

Instead, I say things like "You think *all* rich people are evil? Don't you want to be rich, too?" *grin* I still get strange looks, but sometimes people begin to think, too...
