Liberal Democrat, because I believe human beings are entitled to a certain level of exsistence because they are human beings.

To me (the use of the word because as in a natural progression) it almost seems to imply that Conservative Republicans do not "believe human beings are entitled to a certain level of existence because they are human beings".

Any "line of thinking" that allows one to make blanket sweeping statements that by implication cause others to be seen as incapable of compassion, and perhaps even viewed with disdain and contempt.....do nothing to foster understanding and discussion among people, IMHO.

Of course, I am registered Republican now.....and was married to a Libertarian and a Republican.....even when I was a "Liberal Democrat".

So I could be a little biased.....but that's the way I see it.

When I was researching the different Parties here online, I found it very difficult to find for what the Parties stood. The AGP and the LPA both had statements to the effect that they believed in human rights - though they were worded differently. I like that they had this statement, because given events occuring in the world today, I think it is far better to make the statement that this (inalienable human rights) is a priority of the party.

I may possibly also believe this statement to be important, because when I view the picture outside Oz, I don't see this happening. I am very grateful I live here and not in the Congo or Somalia, for example.

We are having a State Election today and of course, a lot of the talk at the workplace turned to Politics. (Voting is compulsory in Oz.)
So what happens if someone doesn't vote? What if they are sick or don't have transportation or some other issue?

I could explain my views in one word, but some people wouldn't know what that word meant.

I especially dislike it when someone expects me to defend every action of every politician they assume I support, as if I'm a spokesman for some party or am in office myself. So unless someone volunteers that their views are similar to mine, I generally don't bring up the subject.

If you absolutely don't vote and didn't make prior arrangements with the AEC (Australian Electorate Commission), then you'll likely be fined. Our last Federal Election, I was in the US at the time, so I arranged to cast my vote using postal ballot. The papers were sent out to me, I filled them out as required and sent them back. If you are unable to vote - say medical reason, coma, something that prevents you from physically being able to vote - that can be dealt with as well.

Ah yes, I agree with you here. Something I cop some hassle over occasionally is if the Local or State elected politician isn't of my supported Party, but I like what he/she is doing. That generally doesn't go over too well. lol

Drew Carey once defined a libertarian as a "conservative who still gets high."

I also appreciate the joke about the guy sitting in the movie theatre; while the liberal behind him is reaching into his back pocket making sure he doesn't have a dividend check offensive to society, the conservative sitting next to him is reaching in his front pocket making sure he doesn't have an erection offensive to God.

Also, two of the biggest lies in politics are:

1) Democrats are compassionate.

2) Republicans believe in limited government.

The only way the two parties differ is in not limiting government, but in the role government plays. Republicans generally want to use government to legislate their definition of morality (somewhat hypocritical in light of recent scandals), while Democrats want to spend us into oblivion (The Bush Administration were essentially renamed Kennedy Democrats who started this current trend).

Basically, I want a government that is both fiscally responsible and stays out of our personal lives (unlike the current brand of neocons who dominate the Republican party). Therefore, I use the term libertarian to define myself as being fiscally conservative, but socially liberal. However, the primary weakness of libertarianism lies in practically implementing a limited structure that tends toward anarchy. I do recognize the need for governmental structure, and the necessity of certain social programs.
