Politicians have lost their way on the most basic level. When our Constitution was written, the idea was for representatives elected by the people to go to Washington and serve the people. This service, WAS NOT MEANT TO BE A CAREER or a golden retirement parachute. After serving, the representative would return to private life and work.

We see the consequences now of having career politicians. They're spoiled and pampered, more concerned with the perks of staying in office than doing the people's work. Without ever working in the private sector or as a business owner, how can we even expect these people to understand the problems of average Americans ? Answer...we can't.

It's time for term limits. It's time to get representatives from various ages and backgrounds. And if everyone despises lawyers, why do we keep electing them ?

I think that many politicians know what they should do. They actually should often do what is right in their mind as opposed to following trends. Impatience & fear of change cannot guide them like it does the general masses.

I am not sure that term limits would help. It very well might. I want to see what the many that are retiring will do this year & that would help to evidence out there. It seems that the number of retirees is growing & growing so we may get a lot of information to look at.

Looking at history is difficult because finding the causal relationship between the vote & the time would be very hard to determine. Did many buck the system or just go with the flow? What reasons led to them bucking the system or going with the flow?

I know that I would go out with a bang if I were in that situation but I can't say that for someone else.

Term limits would keep minds on the job instead of just being re-elected.

They would cut down on the cronyism.

When Senators who are a shoo-in to be re-elected are walking away because Congress is such a mess, that might be another hint that it's time to reboot and try something else.

They would inject new ideas from the more frequent turnover.

The President has a two term limit, why not Congress or the Senate ?

With limits, we'd be much more likely to get people wanting to serve, than the power hungry looking for a career.

You realize that only they have the power to make that rule, right?

I researched that once and found out the legislation has been proposed several times (Ron Paul, who I might note is a career politician, had proposed a bill for this several times earlier in his "career"). It has never been seriously considered though.

Yeah, I know. But nothing changes if nobody talks about it.

Actually, nobody reads the political threads here anyway....what was I thinking ?

Interesting enough the trend seems to be the bigger government is the more powerful the lobby and special interest have become.

There is a process, not that I can think of it at the moment and I need to head to class but voters can compel legislation. It takes an insane percent of the voters but it can be done. It was put in the constitution for just such purpose. I know the tea party has mentioned it a few times. If I remember I will look it up later.

Well just kidding it is apparently more fiction than fact. Apparently states can call for a constitution convention to amend the US constitution to limit the terms. Just the sheer number of politicians we would have to compel makes it darn near impossible. O well
