This post is to illicit open and honest communication on where we are as a country. I personally think that we have grown as a relatively young nation-and I want our country to move forward and continue to do better. We are not a perfect nation, but, nonetheless, we try to do good, and here, so many have succeeded with so little to start with, regardless of their background.

We are still quite backwards in a lot of ways.

I think that as generations pass things will continue to get closer to MLK's dream.

We can & must work continuously to solve problems that exist & those that will arise.

In re: to bigfincat, I am a glass 1/2 full type of gal, and I would have to agree with you on some of your statement. I do feel like we all have to work together to make things better. Working together, is what really helped us to get this far-and make this much positive progress.

Not by a long shot.

Race seems an intractable problem, more so because one ideology (not one race) thinks subsidy is a solution, while another ideology thinks subsidy is a problem.

How about these idea:

We need to end welfare. All of it, wound down and eliminated totally on a five-year schedule; to the extent that govenment wishs to provide a floor standard of living, it should be through the provision of direct employment.

To support significantly expanded groth and economic opportunity, it is necessary to get non-productive assets working. A man in prison, a woman on the dole, is like a factory with half the machines sitting idle. The US should establish a quantitative target of at least 90% reduction in incarceration, also within five years.

As I see it, a focus on economic growth needs to be the essential national priority; it exceeds all others, and it can not be deferred any longer. Anything else will forever be a zero sum game for resources.

I do think that things gave gotten better.

Thirtysomethings are pretty accepting & twentysomethings even moreso.

I would give some credit to Tiger Woods for breaking down barriers with the older crowd. His extreme popularity has an exponential effect.

President Obama has taken it even further.

Bigfincat,

That is largely ignoring grossly disparate outcomes - which are what serious people care about.

That people recognize Tiger Woods if not his behavior does not change the issues of excessive incarceration, underperforming in labor market outcomes, illigitimacy, less effective medical care, etc, which continue, largely unchanged since at least the last decade.

I was referring to more of a trust factor.

There is a double standard.

Minorities tend to have to be really, really clean cut to get that respect & trust on first impressions. They have to work harder to gain it. That affects every aspect of the social & economic ladder.

White people tend to have to be very rough around the edges (tattooed, aggressive looking, or unkempt) not to get such trust.

The older, rich, white crowd fully accepted Tiger which is a large step.

Younger generations are continuously becoming more & more comfortable with differences. I am sure that deeper integration in schools & communities has something to do with that.

You are only looking at it from a results angle. There is also a very serious causal angle.

Does your mind really go that far to the underclass when the topic of Black America comes up?

What % are on welfare or incarcerated?

There is also the very large hard-working part of the population... even the college educated.

Do many upper-management individuals like to play/watch golf?? That is the audience that has a lot to do with economic advancement.

I see attitude changes with every generation. When more & more suburban populations are integrated more & more equality will come about.

Unfortunately, I don't see much that would bring about greater acceptance. Only time... & a lot of it.
