Though this was interesting:

Video - Breaking News Videos from CNN.com

Controversial program with seemingly successful results.

Might this be a next step in the US war on drugs?

Very...interesting. My first instinct was to think of nicotine patches. The problem with those is they prolong the nicotine addiction; the only real way to remove your physical addiction to nicotine is to remove it completely from your system. Even a small amount of nicotine affects your brain chemistry. So all nicotine patches do is help your health a bit and give the patch companies some money instead of cigarette companies but do little to actually remove the addiction. Since nicotine is as addictive as heroin using a similar "solution" seemed like it was doomed to failure.

They have a good point, however, in the criminal realm. Unlike nicotine heroine is illegal. This creates an entirely different type of dependence on the drug that goes beyond just the physical addiction. Sort of like how making alcohol illegal increased crime but didn't do much to help prevent alcohol abuse perhaps legalizing heroin in a controlled situation like this could have similar beneficial results.

It's a challenging question. Perhaps a system with a bit more power behind it besides AA in medical community could really help people.

Might be worth trying. Even if it does seem a bit silly, haha.

I think, that if you legalize drugs and have a company produce them instead of criminals, you will take a large chunk of cash out of criminals pockets. Criminals such as Al Queda and the Mexican Cartel. People who are users are going to use regardless if it's legal or not, so why clog up our prison system? I say give them a first class ticket to an OD, as long as they can afford to pay the tax that is. Society gets a little money out of throwing an addict 6 feet under. Problem solved, everyone happy.
