So Obama's got to close Gitmo, but he cannot let these guys loose, and he cannot try them on US soil. He's facing the grim reality that Bush may've been absolutely right about Gitmo, and his campaign rhetoric was just that: rhetoric.

I've speculated for some time that Obama will simply move Gitmo to a new location, and use the same rules and tribunals. He'll claim it's different, but we're not that dull, are we.

I figured he'd move it to Okinawa, or the Philippines, somewhere in the Pacific, you know. We have a ton of little islands out there, and they're well-protected.

He'll say, "I closed Gitmo!"

Our children will sing his praise.

But he'll just be moving the facility.

I guess, techinically, in lawyer-speak, he literally will have "closed" Gitmo, and now we can discuss more on healthcare, problem solved.

Here's a snip from the news today.

White House near picking site for Guantanamo detainees - Yahoo! News

"The administration has told Congress as many as eight detainees could go to the Pacific island of Palau next month."

Could Palau be our new Gitmo! It's a lot closer to Afgh and the ME, so it's a shorter boat ride for these guys!

Maybe O's just optimizing the detention, eh.

Perhaps. Just a few hundred million dollars later, with the same old Gitmo rules, Gitmo will be closed, and replaced by Palau-O...

Fixed it for ya.

Actually we don't own much in the Pacific anymore. Saipan, Guam, and Samoa are about it. He'd be a bigger idiot than anyone would believe if he brought them ont U.S. soil.

He'll say, "I closed Gitmo!"

We've already paid Palau to take a bunch of them. Hey, what's a couple hundred million $$ more?

Maybe O's just optimizing the detention, eh.

Perhaps. Just a few hundred million dollars later, with the same old Gitmo rules, Gitmo will be closed, and replaced by Palau-O...

Like I said, already in the works. Except they're living free in a villa with a pool. Google it.

Here's a late article on who they're actually moving to Palau. Apparently, they're Chinese Muslims who cannot be extradited to China without fear of death.

2 more Uighur detainees at Gitmo heading to Palau - Guantánamo - MiamiHerald.com

They did transfer a couple of these guys to BERMUDA, though. Maybe it'll be Bermuda-O.

Why is it they can't be tried in the states? I don't get that. They fall under the Geneva Convention so if not in the US they should have a SPEEDY trial in international or military courts. If they military dropped the ball and didn't collect any whitnesses or evidence then guess what.....let them go. Keep a close eye on them, possibly put some sort of tracking device on them/in them (lol), but let them go. If you believe in the US constitution then you should believe in a FAIR and SPEEDY trail for EVERYONE.

If their home country is going to keel them then so be it. That's just a chance you take when you get mixed up with the wrong people and get rounded up in Afghanistan of all places. There is very few reasons for ANY foreign national to be there. Either you are a crazy humanitarian with no regards for your own life or you are up to some "shady" stuff. BUT, that gives us no right to send someone to jail or the chair without hard evidence.

So regardless of where they decide to move these prisoners they need to be tried under some sort of judicial system. And GITMO is NOT the only place that these rules needs to apply. A prisoner of war is a prisoner of war regardless of where they are held. Someone needs to actually READ the Geneva Convention articles. You'll find it is VERY clear on what category these people fall into.

Yeah, they're foreign terrorists captured abroad, classified as POW's, NOT U.S. citizens entitled to rights under the U.S. Constitution.
Not trying to start a peeing contest or anything, I'm just asking.

I live in Ks and we have Levenworth which is about as secure as it gets, but apparently we are afraid of a few maybe "terrorists" In WWII my we had camps for SS officers and the Africka Corps soldiers all over the place. My grandfather did some of the translating for them. Talk about bad guys. We have become such wusses that our Senators hold up congressional action until they are assured that no one will be sent here. Please!!!!

I remember we had a discussion about this in a previous thead. I remember having a pretty good reply to pretty much the same questions in the previous round lol. I'll go look it up again. If I recall correctly we came to an agreement last time on how it should be handled. Too bad we have absolutely no influence on government policy eh?

Is this sort of like "closing" Iraq to move everyone to Afghanistan?

This whole thing reminds me somewhat of a child cleaning up the room like his parents told him to by pushing everything under the bed.

Just sayin'. =)
