There are quite a few folks here who really only post to the politics forum. What is it about politics which make you want to discuss it? Are you fascinated by it? Frustrated by it? Just want to be as informed as possible? Just like to argue?

I almost never discuss politics anywhere else. Mostly, it is a combination of something I'm actually interesting in commenting on, or learning from; and the thoughts of others. Lots of smart people here who are either flippant or put forth well-reasoned thoughts. I learn from both.

Dunno. All I know is I probably ~shouldn't~ post on politics. I'm too direct, too blunt, too angled, and too poignant.

Eventually, it'll be the politics that gets me banned from eha.

I think that there is a noticeable difference between bluntly stating your opinion; than obnoxiously stating your opinion. And that's something we all have control over, whether we choose to employ said control is another matter. I haven't been offended or creeped out by any of your comments. Perhaps you are a little too hard on yourself?

Well, like Meri, for the most part I don't discuss politics in real life. I really enjoy listening though. When I do say something, however, it's usually to ask a question to receive further clarification, or that leaves them thinking about the true-to-life application of their ideas. On-line, of course, I am more apt to support my own ideas.

Why do I like to discuss politics? For the same reason I enjoy discussing religion. It's so taboo in polite conversation!! I kid, I kid. Politics, like religion, dictates how we are able to live our day to day lives. We live in a society rather than hovels secluded on a remote mountain side somewhere. I think it's imperative to understand how our society is structured and to join in shaping the evolution of our society.

I tend to post here only when a topic interests me. I'm a political junkie and I love a good debate (professional hazard I guess). When you get right down to it though, why do I post on the politics board? Malice. Pure good-old fashioned Malice.

In response to the title, Politics are nothing more than Opinions these days, they affect everyone and no one so getting religious about them would be deafening. I'm religious about being gravely misinformed though not about getting gravely misinformed.

In your "about me" profile, you ask for political leanings. I stated that I was a liberal. Within, oh, a few minutes I was openly attacked. When I defended myself, you gave me a warning. If politics is a topic you want us to avoid, please do not make it part of the personality profile. I will never talk about politics again because it isn't safe. You evidently found what I said in defense of myself but didn't follow the link to what was said about me. I was done with this person on Friday and today I get the message from you. Eharmony is not a safe place to state your political leanings and God forbid you defend yourself so, do us all a favor and take politics out of the personality profile.

To me politics is a rough gauge of awareness. Regardless of someone's political views if they have a basis for them and actually keep up with the world around them I find this a sign of someone who is looking at more than themselves and their issues.

I enjoy political debates because, like debate itself, they tend to have no true "right" answer and you need to bring in a lot of facts in order to support your claims. This means I'm forced to do some research and make sure I can back what I say up which in turn leads me to learning new things. If it weren't for this forum, for instance, there's no way I would have bothered to read the first five hundred pages of Obama's health care bill. But because I wanted to prove a point I forced myself to do it (and it was painful!).

I like to eliminate ignorance. Not only from other people from myself as well. By throwing my ideas out on the forums I cause other people to post facts and ideas I may not have seen or considered before and this makes me more knowledgeable about the world around me.

So I guess you could say because I think it's fun =).

Sassy, how did you become attacked for being a liberal within seconds? Nobody is going to see your profile at all unless you post something and they look it up and your political leanings should be obvious based on what you say anyway. Considering several of our community leaders list "liberal" on their profile I don't really know if you can argue there's an anti-liberal bias (and I've found they hold their own on the politics forum). I could be wrong, though.

Most likely if you "defended yourself" by attacking another member you'd get a warning, if you "defended yourself" by arguing with facts or saying that your beliefs are your own I sincerely doubt you'd get a warning.

There are plenty of people on the politics forums who openly state their political views and are not warned or banned for doing so. One thing to keep in mind is that politics are, basically by definition, opinions. They're your take on facts, your conclusions based on those facts. If you present your opinions as facts you're probably going to get beat on a bit because now you've left the realm of argument and entered the realm of "I'm right and you're wrong."

I don't know the situation you're referring to but if you wish to participate in political discussion feel free to do so. Just make sure you come in with the understanding that people will disagree with you regardless of your political views. Heck I disagree with people on individual views which is why you'll see me arguing for and against the ideas of the same person (ask dito ).

If backing up yourself in a political debate sounds fun and interesting you're in the right place. If you think disagreement is a personal attack this might not be the best situation for you (and I mean that in general, not you specifically).

Have fun and I hope to see you in the political discussions!
