I am early 40's Republican, but I grew up in a working class Democratic home, and my two favorite Presidents of the modern era are Reagan and Truman. If I had lived in the 40's and 50's I would have been a conservative Democrat.

I'll keep my comments to the modern era because to say best or worst of all time I'd have to go back and review my history which would take a few hours.

In the modern era I'd have to say a tie between Nixon and Carter. Carter for all the reasons that have been mentioned. Nixon is obvious for the watergate scandal and the corruption and arrogance that led to it. But another reason Nixon ranks up there as the worst is his complete mishandling of the Cold War. It was Kissinger and Nixon that came up with the strategy of Detente' which enabled the USSR to do whatever it wanted in the world without any fear of pushback. When Reagan came into office he declared Detente' a failure and set up a new policy that we would challenge Soviet aggression everywhere it raised it's head and seek to push it back and support the aspirations of freedom in all the Soviet block countries. I did a research paper on the Cold War, and I relied heavily on a speech from Margaret Thatcher where she talks about the failure of Detente'.

Let me preface this post by saying that hopefully you can tell from my previous post that I'm not a partisan hack. Unlike a lot of my Republican friends I don't think Clinton was that bad. Overall I would have given George W. Bush a grade of C+ for his 8 years, but then he and Paulson approved the Tarp program which was the Government bailouts, and my grade dropped to C-. I sincerely believe I don't look through a partisan lens but just call it on both sides as I see it.

Having said that......I am increasingly concerned that Obama may end up ranking up there as one of the worst. I certainly didn't think that when he first came into office. But he has increasingly done things that has caused me concern. This is on both the domestic front and with issues of foreign affairs. He is leaning further left then I thought he would. I can't tell if he is following policies he genuinely believes in or if he is caving into advice from the far left. Clinton made the mistake of listening to a lot of bad advice his first two years, and then was able to turn it around so we'll see.

Do you mean the same Maggie Thatcher who opposed the extradition of Pinochet from England, saying he had done so much for capitalism! Or Margaret Thatcher the cold-war hypocrite, who recently admitted she tried to prevent the fall of the Berlin Wall ("Mr. Gorbachev, DON'T tear down that Wall!")...?

"Two months before the fall of the Berlin Wall, Margaret Thatcher told President Gorbachev that neither Britain nor Western Europe wanted the reunification of Germany and made clear that she wanted the Soviet leader to do what he could to stop it."

And a quick google search did lead to quite a few articles saying virtually the same thing ... But I was unable to find these supposed secret minutes from 1989 ... I wouldn't be too surprised if everything was taken out of context again

You mean the words "Don't", "No" and "Not" have another "context"?
Gee, at the least, that must be an interesting attitude to have on a date!

Huh? As a quick reminder ... You recently pulled a line from Bush, about 5 posts up or so ... When one looks at the response in it's entirety a far different light is shed ... If I could find anywhere these secret minutes from 20 years ago, it would be one thing and since I very much doubt that she said only a single liner or two, I am betting that more was said ... Thus, the possibility that it was taken out of context ... If, let's say she said something to the affect of 'We need to stop Germany from uniting and tearing down the wall' ... But had prefaced that with a discussion about concerns with regards to if they would once again attack Europe, the coment would make more sense.

Context is key nearly always ... A date saying 'No', 'Not' 'Never' at different times could be a good thing, a bad thing, or something that doesn't matter.

Then apparently you've never heard of date rape prevention campaigns, or the slogan that "No is a complete sentence."

Of course you can always tell the Judge that you didn't understand the "context"...

Nope ... Haven't heard of date rape prevention campaigns ... Nope, haven't heard the slogan "No is a complete sentence" ... Since I won't be having such relations with a woman prior to marriage and she too will be deeply religious ... I won't have a problem keeping her well-being towards the top of my priorities in life ...

But then you are more than welcome to tell the Judge that she said 'Yes', when they Yes may have been for a cup of coffee, seeing as how context doesn't carry any weight with you

Ageless, timeless, right-to-center libertarian. Well..not so ageless, and that's why I could not accurately and fairly vote on the worst president in our nation's 230 year plus history. I know Rush Limbaugh believes the Clinton administration was the most corrupt administration. However, he fails to take into account the breadth of our nation's history, convieniently perhaps. He fails to take into account Ulysses S. Grant, although while a more than adequate general. As president, he presided over a notoriously corrupt administration.

Therefore, I cannot make an accurate assessment of our nation's worst president. However, I do believe Reagan was perhaps our most overrated president.

You remember Reagan? He single-handedly won the Cold War. Brought the nation out of a recession. The mythmakers hoped to enshrine him on Mt. Rushmore. And, the Republican presidential hopefuls aspired to his mantle.

However, internal events in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe led to the Cold War's demise. Economic recovery was inevitable when oil prices returned to normal levels. His 1981 tax cut was followed quickly by tax hikes you rarely hear about. And although he failed to shrink government, he did shrink government regulation and oversight leading to savings-and-loan crisis of the late 1980's. Marginal tax rates for the wealthy were cut, but rising payroll taxes hit the working class. He astronomically increased defense spending, while cutting certain social programs creating our first major homeless epidemic. He handed his successor an enormous deficit. And, although this is now a minor footnote, he presided over the Iran-Contra scandal. However, the mythmakers conviently whitewash the 80's with a nostalgic makeover in hopes of reframing a conservative "golden age" with Bonzo as president.
