I certainly could be wrong but I was under the impression you were some sort of eh "moderator". If that's the case I'll offer that your response to me seems to be short on its' supply of "moderation" and thus may not qualify as your finest hour. As for claiming a mistake about the reported numbers ruins the credibility of all statements in a post - you've been living among the D.C. vermin too long.
NearDC is a Community Leader. As a CL we have a responsibility for light moderation duties in the sense that we will warn users about breaches in the Community Guidelines, remove threads/posts that clearly break these guidelines (or repeated posts etc.), and try to keep discussion on track. We are not paid moderators and do not work for eHA or eHarmony.

My point is that we are encouraged to engage in discussion and are not supposed to be the "parents" keeping the "kids" civil but otherwise stay out (like actual moderators). The majority of my time as a CL is spent giving advice and adding my opinions, not being "thought police" and spanking all the people who think hate speech is simply "the honest truth" (irony intended).

Perhaps NearDC's comments were a bit sarcastic but the numbers were way off. If I came in and said something like "well, the reality is that 95% of Americans think Obama is wrong!" and I didn't get a single "oh puleeze!" remark I'd probably think you're all crazy .

Either way the whole argument is sort of silly. Numbers of protesters are not, and never have been, a good indication of political intent. Who cares if there were two million there or two thousand? All that tells you is that there's a difference in one million, nine-hundred ninety-eight thousand people who have the free time and money to get off work, travel to Washington DC, and stand around acting like they're doing something.

Even if I agreed with them (which is one more person "protesting") I can't go. Why? I have obligations that prevent me from traveling across the country (school, the military, no money for plane tickets, etc.). All you learn from a political protest is a guess at how many people in a particular movement are able to either make their own vacation time or don't have jobs at all. In other words the middle class is virtually absent from political protests. The only thing statistics without context tell you is that someone can count.

And all of that is my opinion and has nothing to do with moderation, which is my original point. Politics are all about opinions. There's really no such thing as a "political truth." If something is "true," if it cannot be argued, then it really has no business being anywhere near politics. Liberal or conservative, I think we can agree that totalitarianism is not what we want, right? And for those wondering where that logical leap originated read Hannah Arendt's "Truth and Politics" or take my word for it .

Could Neardc perhaps have used a lighter tone? Probably. Then again this is the politics forum. Either way it's our job to prevent breaches of the community guidelines. We understand that politics is an emotional, opinionated subject and as such are lighter on moderating things like "tone" than we perhaps would be in other forums. Things get heated around here all the time and if we shut down every person who gave a sarcastic comment directed at another member or their political beliefs we probably wouldn't even have this forum at all...which, by the way, was a solution we discussed (and ultimately rejected).

Either way I'll shut up before she gets mad at me for "defending" her when she's perfectly capable of doing so herself . I mainly wanted to clarify that Community Leaders are not the same as moderators and you should expect us to engage in discussion beyond eloquent "play nice!" comments. Feel free to disagree and argue with us; unless it breaks the community guidelines we aren't going to moderate it. I personally learn more from these forums through disagreement than anything else so I encourage it.

I hope that makes sense, and actually added new information to the topic, unlike Obama's speeches!

See what I did there?

With regards to illegal aliens getting insurance coverage under the 'proposed plan' (whichever of the 20 plans they decide to go with, pelase note that is an exaggerrated number) ... Under current law, Social Security numbers are not allowed to be required to get insurance ... All you need is a DOB and name and answer the medical questions and sign ...

Now, maybe it is just me ... But it sure seems like it would be rather easy to get onto the government plan at that point then ...

So I came back to look at this thread. Been sitting here 30 min or so debating about whether to say anything. What the H...Heck, we don't see each other in person...

Seneca......is my Friend. I like to back my Friends, but more than that, I believe him to be an Honorable Man, even though a little rough around the edges.

nearDC.....I owe. She helped me clean up my posts, showed me how to do the nice little boxes when I quote.

last12C.....I am drawn to because we share something in common no one should have to. She's a gentle Soul to be much admired.

Grace.....I've had my disagreements with, but I have to respect her as a minister of God, and a leader in her community.

and Lizard.....well, who couldn't like a guy with a Song like yours? Those people surrounding us? Even your face seems so familiar!

I like all you people. But I do hate ugly arguments. This is just the kind of thing I was referring to in my post. They are driving a wedge between us. If we don't reach out to one another, they will steal our country out from under our noses while we are busy arguing with each other. Sometimes I honestly think that's what it's all about. We'll wake up one day, and our Freedoms will be gone, and we'll be left to wonder why...

I hope somebody knows what the heck I'm talking about here. I hope I didn't just lose a Friend, and make a bunch of new enemies.

Lizard, I left your quotes in as a perfect example of a polite correction containing absolutely no snarkiness!

Naturally, I sat here so long, worrying and fretting over my post, that Legend came in while I was all tied up. I would not have left you out, had I known. You deserve a little credit for starting this whole gosh-darn thread! I like your new pic, been meaning to tell you for some time now.

Thanx for the shout-out and the compliment on my pic (I hate all of my pics so your kind words are a real boost for me!).

....but I am slowly regretting even starting this post

I had posted something earlier that got moderated, but I did want to step back into the thread once more to publicly thank lizard for both the public and private apology. Not sure why it got modded, unless I left an l out of "public"?! Oh dear!

For reference, the fact-checking sites I used were snopes, politifact, and factcheck.

I went off what CBO report said, in any case it really doesn't matter because we each have our own opinions which is what our country is founded on.

Rather than having to go back to a previous post by someone else regarding how many were at the rally I just wanted to post the following link The Real Number of Protesters - Zac Moilanen

After having read through all 5 pages and how hostile everyone's got, I'm not even gonna chime in, except to say "can't we all just get along?"

And, P.S. glad someone else supports that up-front smile!

Like democrats, more or less.

More specifically, they don't do things like bipartisanship, power sharing, or any other favors for the democrats. They run full bore cut throat, scorched earth politics the way the left does.
