Looking for opinions on this. If we don't talk about it, nothing will change. More of our soldiers and their families will suffer for no good reason.

The war in Afghanistan is a war we cannot win. They have been invaded by everyone from Alexander the Great to the British Empire to the Soviet Union to...us. And they have never been conquered.

The Soviets, when they were a true military superpower, invaded in 1979. They used brutal tactics, engaging in a true war (unlike ours) and left in 1988 defeated. They refer to it as "Russia's Vietnam".

We fight to get home in a year. The Afghans fight as a generational war. From generation to generation, they will never give up. Poverty, war, corruption, and dying are a way of life there. Afghans will do anything for a friend, and anything to kill an enemy.

We kill militants, but we also kill civilians. By killing civilians, we create more and more enemies. When a suicide bomber or roadside bomb kills innocents, they don't blame the insurgents, they blame us. Because without us being there, there would be no fighting.

Our superior weapons don't matter, better equipped troops don't matter. The Afghans are defending their own country just as we would defend ours here. And they've been doing it for hundreds of years.

We can't win this fight, it's time to bring the troops home.

Our mission in Afghanistan started for a good reason and I'd hate to see us go out as losers. But if we left now, the Taliban and al-Qaeda would just take over again and we'd be right back where we were on September 10, 2001.

All our past efforts there are now complicated by an apparent bogus election.

What needs to be done is stop the pussyfooting for politically correct reasons and relentlessly crush and exterminate both al-Qaeda and the Taliban by whatever means necessary. The longer we wait, the more difficult it will become.

Is that really possible? I don't know. Maybe it's not and strategically, the next best alternative is keeping the fight against them 'over there'.

I grew up and served during Vietnam and know people who died there and I don't like our guys dieing for someone else's cause. But this isn't someone else's cause. In fact it's an issue that affects most of 'the west'. It's too bad our efforts there are mucked up by this Iraq thing which is someone else's cause.

You started this thread haz, do you really think we should just pack it up now?

I just don't see an exit strategy Tweet. We just can't root out the bad guys. This isn't a close-ended war like WW2, these people live to fight. They've done it for centuries. Aside from exterminating the whole population and starting over, we can't win. No one likes to lose, but it's better to do it now than 10 years from now. In the first 8 years, we've accomplished very little.

As far as keeping the terrorists at bay...We can't keep uneducated Mexicans from freely crossing our borders, much less highly trained and motivated terrorists. By us being over there, we're only creating more enemies. Without us over there to actively fight and stir up the hatred, most of these insurgents will get bored and go back to farming or regular work.

Don't you think the main objective of going into Afghanistan was to get Bin Laden? That is what most Americans believed. Yes, we wanted to get all the terrorists but going after him was always the top priority. President Bush could wrap all of the reasons for the war in Afghanistan in a pretty package, but his own objective was to go after Saddam Hussein in Iraq. Our troops in Afghanistan was a tradeoff for that war. Just smoke and mirrors.

Like O'bama said.."wrong place, wrong war" about Iraq.

I do agree Afghanistan is a war we can not win. Some days I even wonder if "Bin Laden" is a real person. If we catch him or he dies, would that make this war come to an end? Is that what it will take to bring our troops home?

Bin Laden has been the most hunted man in the world for 8 years. With all of our troops, satellites, drones, spies, etc...he's been able to hide out in a primitive country and not be found. These people are dirt poor, but not one of them has turned in a tip to get the $25 million reward. Washington can't seem to understand that our cultures don't value the same things. And even if we kill Bin Laden, who's to say his replacement wouldn't be worse ? Kill him if we get the chance, but it won't change anything.

You don't think that most Americans believe that the war in Afghanistan is necessary to get Bin Laden and once that is done the reason to be there has been accomplished?

The majority of Americans never supported the war in Iraq...they believed that this was the wrong place to send our troops. A lot of people tolerate the war in Afghanistan as a necessary evil to get the guy they believe responsible for 9-11.

If they catch or kill Bin Laden, the support for this war will come to an end from the American public. I know, after 8 years...how much longer do we wait or do we finally come to the conclusion that we will never get him? Some people will always believe "whatever it takes".

Of course this is just my opinion and generalization.
