Funny that we appoint "czars" to positions that are outside congressional confirmation.

They are completely without checks and balances, appointed only by the sitting president, and yield a hidden and unadvertised power over our elected government. I'm not even sure how many there are, or what the heck they do, or what responsibilities they really have.

Funny that we call them "czars," and nobody balks. It's almost feudal in nature, an appointed seat for noblemen.

I'm not sure about any real power over elected government. It's just an adviser to the president with a catchy title that fakes people out that something is actually being done to cure a problem, to make the president look good. And it's an accepted way for the president to give a job to his cronies. I guess they'll all do it now. What we need now is a government waste czar. Wouldn't that be something....more government waste to control government waste.

Just the word czar bothers me. I guess that makes Obama the Czar of czar's. How disturbing.

Bush had a drug czar, no?

I just think it's weird that we use that term. It's like having an environmental Na.zi, or a religious Inquisitionist, or an Emperor of Foriegn Relations.

Seems like a weird catch-phrase to jab into an American's face.

I'd fire all my "czars" and replace them with Commandos, or Pugilists, or something far more catchy and with fewer negative historic undertones than czar.

Next thing you know, somebody will be the "The People's Party," and for some reason, we'll all think that's a swell idear.

I know, I should probably stay out of the political discussion but this particular one caught my eye.

The whole question came about with the Van Jones ordeal. Frankly I don't care that he signed a petition calling for an investigation in whether or not 9/11 was an inside job. That was his right and he wasn't working for Obama when he did it. I don't know the guy or much about him. What I do know is that I don't recall Obama (and please someone correct me if I am wrong with evidence) ever referring to him as a "czar".

The first use of that term I heard was the story that Glen Beck did on Van Jones. With that said, even if the white house did themselves use the term it is very misleading as these special advisers have no real power, they are glorified thinkers for the president and make suggestions. Bush had them, Obama has them. Hasn't every modern president had hoards of special advisers on every topic from Education to what color suit they should wear?

Yes... this is a Republic and there is no room for "czars" in a Republic.

We do not have a Presidential Administration, we have a carnival with a bunch of un-vetted Liberals running their individual side-shows.

None of them knows what the heck they are doing except spending money and none of them cares.

You're correct - "czar" is not an official title in this administration nor was it in any other. It's just media shorthand for the sometimes cumbersome titles often given to administration officials. Van Jones was a "special advisor on 'green' jobs at the White House council on environmental quality". I agree that "czar" is an odd word to use, but there's no mistaking that it's shorter to say, when you've got to report in 30- and 60-second soundbites....

Yes, it was the Jones article that triggered this topic. Nice deduction, Mr. Holmes...
