Read this first:: Bill Bryson's "A Walk In The Woods", his description of his Hike along the entire length of the Appalatian trail...It summarizes the true story of two old friends who decide to hike the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail. Examines the book's value to hikers.
I'll look into it. I saw some lengthy video following various hikers on PBS and there are some Internet boards devoted to discussion of the trail and organizing with others. Hopefully before I get too much older ...

I'm sure that many of her conservative supporters who have recently contributed money to her are none too happy.

I hope that her life after politics (if she is out of politics) is as peaceful as her political tenure was turbulent.

If she remains in politics, it will be hard for her to shake the perception that she quit the people of Alaska when the going got tough.
We know all too well the ignorance and arrogance of her constituents: religious fundamentalists and zealots, a generous helping of inbred white racists, other social conservatives, and neo-conservatives who manifested the current economic crisis and destroyed American foreign polity.

Wow - This is so obsessively delusional it's sig worthy. It'd be a bit more comical if it weren't the prevelant mindset literally running the country.

Priestess, best to go N to S ...but then you have to consider the time of year you leave. I lived 20 years near part of the Trail in Boone NC.

I enjoyed that book. It gives you a perspective that you won't get from the typical trail guides, that's for sure.

If there is a scandal behind her resignation, I hope she talks about with the press more intelligently than Sanford is right now about his affair..I'm getting to the point where I cringe every time he opens his mouth. Don't these guys have people that tell them, "Just stop talking now" when it gets to this point?
Amen to that! Rule #1 when you've dug yourself into a hole: Stop digging!

So now Sarah Palin's Facebook page is saying that she's quitting so that she might answer a "higher calling". Not sure how the people of Alaska will take the news that governing their state was low on her list of priorities?

...She's not presidential material (nor are most of us; that's not necessarily a criticism)..
let me go out a limb here so you all can cut it off... don't let me down now!

i believe that part of our problem politically is that we are looking for the PERFECT MAN (person) to FIX all of our problems- when in fact our bureaucracy is so vast and amorphous that no one person is not going to make a huge difference (i did not say no difference!)

and the politicians want us to continue to believe the lie. that is why they keep telling us they are indispensable- and we keep believing it- when in reality a political job is not rocket science and most of us could do it if we had the inclination.

sarah palin is as qualified as barack obama is. you and most on here are probably just as qualified.

debate the issues and positions. but none of them are individually essential.

go ahead and start sawing now!

Can I be blunt? Sarah Palin isn't that bright , and quite a number of people who have worked with her have questioned her emotional stability. I think she isn't up to the task of elected office.

The FBI in Alaska is saying that she is not under investigation, which is good to know. But, how will people trust that she won't run away from other big jobs? As Mike Huckabee said on TV today, the job only gets bigger when one runs for President. And even some of her former allies in AK have expressed shock and confusion at her decision: Senator Murkowski said she was letting Alaska down. I don't think it will be easy to recover from this politically, and she doesn't have the foresight to realize it.

Palin wouldn't have a snowballs chance. Nor do any of the other neocons.

Not that it "really" matters because I doubt she would have ever attained the presidency. Until a year ago few knew she even existed ... and a couple years from now most people will have forgotten.
