The Food Program that she was criticizing is not just for 16+ year olds, it is for schoolchildren of all ages. If she wants to lower the age of elgibility for the program, that's one thing. But in her statement, she was criticizing the entire program.

In regards to the low income 16 year olds, telling them to "go find a job" isn't neccessarily very useful. For one thing, they may not be able to get a job due to the lousy economy. Also, they may already have a job and still need help...in some lower income families, the older children struggle to support the rest of the family

The state giving food to low income schoolchildren is not immoral and it doesn't foster dependence. The amount of tax dollars required to fund such a program is minimal.

No one is preventing people from charitably giving. Also, it is true that some of the left loathe religion, but many don't.

|Thanks for the comment Reese! I personally know someone who runs a summer food program here in Indiana. He is a superintendant of something or other and over the ordering of food for most of the schools in the state. He has said before that a lot of the kids that come for the free food aren't even school aged. Middle schoolers and their younger siblings is how he describes the bulk of the kids who take advantage of the program. Kids need to have a chance to be kids, I mean I had a job at 16, but I didn't spend my money on food?! The thought that 16 year olds need to go out and join the workforce so that they can eat frankly disturbs me a little bit, and taking this program is going to hurt more younger kids who can't work than 16 year olds.

I've heard similar things from volunteers at the local food bank here. Their demand rises significantly in the summer because of the lack of free school lunches and breakfasts. Any program that cuts those would surely strain them beyond the breaking point, as they are already giving out smaller bags of groceries than they did during the school year, and this in one of the weathiest counties in the U.S.

Let's remove the politics of smear, shall we? The quote, in context:

Can’t they get a job during the summer by the time they are 16? Hunger can be a positive motivator.

I'm sorry guys but weren't we talking about children?! These are not people who are to be punished, they are the victims here. And yes, maybe their parents are abusing a system that is set up in a way that punishes those who try to work and rewards those that don't, maybe they were born into a family that believe that drugs and alcohol are more important than food. Either way these young people are the victims in this situation and there are a lot of other ways to curb government spending than taking away the only food some kids get. Let's try curbing the amount of money that politicians get for riding around in expensive cars and "entertaining" and generally squeezing the life out of this country.

Riding around in those expensive cars and entertaining is the finder's fee they charge for passing legislation that pays for such programs...in a robust economy there is enough money for the kids and the poverty pimps...in a recession/depression economy there isn't enough and we will find that out soon enough
