What a way to start my day.

A story in today's Phila Inquirer reported that the US is paying the gov't of Palau $200 million to accept 17 prisoners from Gitmo that were captured in Afghanistan and Pakistan. All part of the big O's plan to relocate the detainees and close the prison. You've got to be friggin kidding me.

If they truly aren't a threat, return them to where they were captured you id!ot ! But wait...they are a threat so put them on another tropical island where they can be coddled some more at our expense. $12 million per prisoner. How insane is the Big O's ...er...I mean Big 0's plan going to get?

I think Obama was concerned that, while they may not be a "threat", they would be tortured and/or killed if taken back to their place of origin.

I wasn't aware it was $200 million. Wow, that does seem a bit high.

Forgive my candor and disgust but...that would be just too freakin' bad.

He's taking his bailout plan to a global scale now. For $200 million we could buy the whole island.

I mean, does this guy have his head stuck where the sun don't shine or what?

Well, here's what I turned up in about 3 minutes on Google:

Palau already receives significant foreign aid from the U.S. This is from the GAO website:
For fiscal years 1995-2009, U.S. aid to Palau is expected to exceed $852 million. Compact direct assistance will account for 48 percent of U.S. assistance; this assistance provides general budgetary support for Palau's government operations, including initial investment in a trust fund intended to provide annual distributions of $5 million in 1999-2009 and $15 million in 2010-2044. Compact federal services such as postal, aviation, and weather services will account for about 3 percent of assistance, and construction of a road, finished in 2007, will account for 17 percent of assistance. Palau's receipt of federal programs, providing services such as education grants and community health care, will account for approximately 31 percent of assistance.

I didn't turn up the Inquirer article, but I did find this (and it's even from Fox, to keep you conservatives happy): www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/09/report-obama-administration-talks-palau-resettle-uighur-detainees/

Note that it says "up to $200 million in aid", and keep in mind that foreign aid for the next several years was already under negotitiation. Keep in mind, too, that it's widely belived that these Uighurs would be persecuted in China; and that there was no reason for us to have incarcerated them in the first place. Human rights groups have been after the US to release these 17 men for years. We're not going to make much progress in settling the whole Gitmo debacle until we've settled this part of it.

At any rate, the news today is that China is protesting the whole thing, so who knows. It may be renegotiated anyway, so this whole thing may be a moot point.

Anyway, that's what I found on Google in less time, tweet, than it took you to make angry posts about the President. Just sayin'.

.... there was no reason for us to have incarcerated them in the first place.
OK fine. Release them where they were captured. Who said anything about turning them over to China? Fly them into Bagram Air Base, open the gate and let them out. In Afghanistan where they were captured.

And I wasn't disputing or arguing about all the previous aid to Palau but now you got me started. The previous $800 million plus the next $200 million all for what? To make a tiny piece of coral rock in the middle of the South Pacific habitable? C'mon now.

No wonder the president of Palau says we're his best friend. Stop pouring money into that endless hole and see if he still likes us.

I think we're kind of stuck with this one, though. We've got foreign aid commitments several years into the future. I suspect that "up to $200 million" was merely an extension of an existing agreement, which would most likely have been extended anyway, since we've got a long history of aid to that part of the world. It is not "$12 million per prisoner" to detain nor to care for each prisoner; which is the way I read the OP.

Grace,

The$12 million per detainee was mine. And rightfully so. And when you read other clips of Hillary Clinton and President whatever from Palau kissing each others butts, the future aid is being tied to them accepting these detainees. That equals being paid to take the detainees.
