Most people today are like the woman who ask Franklin the question"what have you given us"....they nervously wait, wringing their hands for father government to hand down his pronouncements and proclamations from on high

It is rather sad. Or most people don't care and don't think they have a voice.

I think it's a more a matter of people not becoming educated in politics/government/social issues (as the video itself demonstrates). There are so many things to learn about im life...like, you know, how this computer/internet thingy works. But, some people do take the time, and make these things a priority....and some people listen to psycho babel that claims to be educated.

Hey! I'm guilty. I don't have the first clue of how to repair an engine. I don't even change my own oil. But I did like to listen to the dyi car repair program on NPR.

Yes but certain things aren't a priority as ones liberty. Certain things are needed to live or to earn a living. You don't really need to know how to change your oil or engine repair if it's not your profession or a hobby. But what the government does can really affect a person.

Modern government appeals to the lower instincts or faults like

Envy...it's not fair that anyone have anything i don't have, unless it's my favorite pop culture icon,i don't care how hard someone has worked they shouldn't have any more than i do...it's not "fair"

Control,i don't like it when people do things i don't approve of,they don't affect me but they offend me and that's enough so i will support laws that restrict their behaviour.

Private rewards and shared consequences,if i do something and it works out great leave me alone the rewards are all mine,if i blow it bail me out, this is your responsability, the bible says for whatever a man sows that shall HE also reap...well i've changed it...for whatever a man sows that shall his neighbor also reap.

Subjective morality,i know what is right, not only for me but everybody else as well so i will support laws that violate the conscience of others in order to impose my morality because it's right and i'm right and i have a right to be right.....in short i have the right to whatever i want in life and it is your responsability to see that i get it...your role is to surrender that portion of your resources that is needed to make my life as good as i want it to be........this is how many Americans today think...and we have the governemnt to prove it.

I agree there is a strange sense of self entitlement today and lack of self reliance.

Bandmate,

I’m curious as to whether or not you followed the link I provided earlier in this thread. I hope you have, or if not, will, as my following post is extremely relevant to the contents of that site.

It seems to me that you fail to comprehend what Liberal/Conservative or Authoritarian/Libertarian actually means in a socio-economic sense. That’s not a failure on your part. It is a symptom of society in general. We do not receive enough education to teach us other wise. We are indoctrinated more than we are educated.

The fact is that the vast majority of American politics is authoritarian and conservative. That includes our, so called, extremely liberal president! (Maybe I should have posted this in the other thread about him being conservative….because in actuality, he is)

For the past 10 years or so, I’ve retaken the test available on the aforementioned site numerous times. On average, about once a year. Why? Because as I learn more, I notice that my views or certain topics change, and I want to gauge how such changes have affected me as an individual.

I will not speak for others who consider themselves liberals on this, but I will speak for myself.

My scores consistently place my views in the lower left quadrant of their graph – slightly nearer the lower left corner than the center of the quadrant. What this means is that economically, I am liberal in my beliefs. I don’t believe in a sense of entitlement, but I do believe in society coming together as a whole to benefit the whole. I believe that the distribution of mutually agreed upon, shared wealth be regulated to avoid corruption of the system. I do not believe in forcing the entirety of personal will to be shared. Although the philosophy of communism has some valid points, I am not communist. If anything, I’m more of a socialist *Gasp*. The cold war is over; it’s time to differentiate between communist and socialist.

On the social scale, I am libertarian, or an anarchist, if you prefer to avoid confusion with the American Libertarian party. I certainly do not believe in controlling the desires, choices, or destiny of any other human being.

I say this in hopes that you can, at least, gain a better understanding of my political views, and will be more empowered to address my post. I have enjoyed debating with you, but I am uncomfortable with some of the gross generalization and assumptions.

Envy, Control, Denial of Rewards, Subjective Morality…those are all bad ideas. Perhaps other “liberals” will be willing to confirm or deny your assertions.

By the way, if you do choose to follow the link and take the test, I would be interested in hearing the results. My suspicion is that you would fall somewhere in the lower right quadrant. I may be wrong.

Interesting link. I like that they boiled a complex concept into such a simple and useful visual. Maybe this is a common chart to more politically-educated folks, but I'd never seen it.

I wonder where they'd put O and the (D) congress on that chart. Close to Mugabe, I guess.

They put Bush as far right as you can go.
