"La Raza" translated into English is "The Race". Question for you fine folks: if a white man was a member of a group called "The Race" what do you think the odds of him getting nominated for anything would be?

I submit that based on her previous comments and La Raza membership that Judge Sotomayor is a racist.

I submit that you are correct...now sit back and get ready for all of the excuses...if not then this is air tight and you will hear nothing.

No excuses from me: She is a blatant racist! Just like all the other in the closet racists that are in the private and public sector. However, I submit that anyone who calls anyone else a racist is a total wuss--I would use another term but I don't think the moderator would like that.

To answer the OP, it wouldn't go over well. That's the realism.

Come on guys get with it. Didn't you hear? She can "make better decisions than a white male." Many Latina women got it going on. But a comment like that...in this day and age... she will be seen as a hero.

If a man made a similiar comment such as "a White man can make a better decision than a Latina" he wouldn't even be thought of as a candidate. When she gets nominated then it's ba lls to the walls.

I assume you have the same objection to membership in the NAACP? That people who belong to that organization are also racist?

I am certain that there are in fact many White people who are already members of the National Council of La Raza. Apparently people don't have a problem with that. And, their corporate partners are such "racist" organizations as the Bank of America, Walmart, Coca-Cola, and General Motors.

You are also assuming a direct translation; that "la raza" in Spanish means exactly the same as "The Race" in English. It does not.

A little background info on the word (from the NCLR website):

Many people incorrectly translate our name, “La Raza,” as “the race.” While it is true that one meaning of “raza” in Spanish is indeed “race,” in Spanish, as in English and any other language, words can and do have multiple meanings. As noted in several online dictionaries, “La Raza” means “the people” or “the community.” Translating our name as “the race” is not only inaccurate, it is factually incorrect. “Hispanic” is an ethnicity, not a race. As anyone who has ever met a Dominican American, Mexican American, or Spanish American can attest, Hispanics can be and are members of any and all races.

The term “La Raza” has its origins in early 20th century Latin American literature and translates into English most closely as “the people” or, according to some scholars, as “the Hispanic people of the New World.” The term was coined by Mexican scholar José Vasconcelos to reflect the fact that the people of Latin America are a mixture of many of the world’s races, cultures, and religions. Mistranslating “La Raza” to mean “the race” implies that it is a term meant to exclude others. In fact, the full term coined by Vasconcelos, “La Raza Cósmica,” meaning the “cosmic people,” was developed to reflect not purity but the mixture inherent in the Hispanic people. This is an inclusive concept, meaning that Hispanics share with all other peoples of the world a common heritage and destiny.

But seriously, is this really the best that the right wing can come up with?

You are upset and reacting emotionally. I don't mean this as an insult. Heck you've seen me have hissy fits. You are much smarter than this. It doesn't seem fair that men lose their jobs over the same or similiar phrase that she used.

So neardc you support a sexist & rascist like her? You see nothing wrong with her comment? If a White male politician said "white men can make better decisions than women/latinas/black women/etc that man would most likely lose his job.

NAACP-why would I object to them? I used to be the founder & Chairman of a Racial Relations Committee.

"and their corporate partners are such "racist" organizations as the Bank of America, Walmart, Coca-Cola, and General Motors."

What the heck does that mean? Are you calling those Corporations racist or are you saying she is legitimized by the sponsorship of these companies?

LaRaza, I don't know much about this organization so I can't say they are this or that. I'm not anti-hispanic. In fact Latinas are God's Gift to lucky men! Gosh they are so hot!

[edited-this is a world reknowned fact. Go half way around the world and ask the men or women there "do you like Latina women?"* end of edit]

"But seriously, is this really the best that the right wing can come up with?"

Taunting eh? When a woman starts taunting it's time to retreat! Men get away she's got a verbal bomb coming (sarcastic observation-didn't you know neardc women are masters of Observation?)

I'm a Political Independent-we switch sides when no one's looking...sh! is the coast clear? While I'm pro-choice I'm also for the death penalty of Homeland Security. The whole dang dept. As an American I can still say that till the Alaskan Labor camps open up for American dissidents (verbal & intellectual Domestic "terrorists." Read "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch.")

setting 2013 America:

"All I said was America needed better security. My neighbor informed on me. DHS came at 3am and took me away. The Judge gave me 10 years for treason. Then she added ten more on top of that for good measure."

Whether Liberal or NeoCon, America is headed towards a new form of Govt. via a 24 hour computerized society. Maybe we should call it a mediaocracy with corporateocracy tendencies. My new book is coming out soon... Under a pen name of course...

*you can substitute the words Latina women and insert Irish, Arabic, Italian, Jewish, Polish, Swedish...the list goes on...
