I love myself some James Harrison - except when he opens his mouth.

This guy doesn't get that you get invited to the White House because you did something noteworthy. In the case of sports teams, you won some type of championship game/match for your sport. The baseball team that wins the World Series, the basketball team that wins the NBA Championship (and if the Cavs don't...oh, never mind - they've got LeBron, the Magic have a whole team - *heavy sigh*), and the football team that wins the Super Bowl are all invited to the Whitehorse when they win their sport's penultimate game. The President usually gets an honorary jersey. There are pictures taken with the Pres and the jersey. That's what happens.

If Harrison was making some type of moral, political, spiritual statement, then perhaps he should have been more eloquent in stating why he wasn't going to go. But his response was just stupid - invite us when we don't win, then I'll go. Dude!!! You don't get invited to the White House because you're a nice guy - you get to go because you came out the victor. Of course Arizona would have been invited if they'd won, that's the point of the tradition, to have the winning team over for pictures!!!

I don't think, as some have stated, this is judging Harrison - his statement or stand, as it were, just strikes me as silly. What is he taking a stand against? A tradition that unfairly rewards the victors of the Super Bowl for winning?? Unfairly ignoring the team that lost? What?? What is he taking a stand against?

Silly. And now I'm all worked up...

He's suppose to make the trip with the team, to represent the team and the sport to the president. It just shows he's not a team player. I don't care how good he is, I'd sit him on the bench until he learns some manners. The president may not even like football but the event is done as a courtesy and should be treated as such on both sides. I'm sure right now the president has more pressing issues to attend to than host a sports team but he makes time. What pressing issues did Harrison have, besides wanting the publicity?

No wonder I hate football. Arrogant you-know-whats paid millions to play a dozen games.

Goodness. He's just one nutjob on a team of otherwise pretty seemingly decent guys. Most of the players in the league are just that - decent guys who don't do stupid things or get into trouble. It's the tiny percentage of all the hundreds of players you hear about who give the sport and the other players a bad name. But isn't that true of everything? The squeaky wheel and all that and that's too bad for all the other players who aren't making trouble - they have to be apolgoists for the tiny percentage of idiots who are their co-workers.

Imagine if you had to constantly explain to people how you're not like the other people who do your job (whatever that job is) they know, when you know a small percentage of those people actually are mean, cruel, ignorant, substance-abusing, wife-beating, cat-kicking brutes? It would get on your nerves having to contanstly defend your own reputation from the behavior of people you don't even know, because everyone else identifies you with those people just by virtue of your shared profession. That's what guys like Troy Polumalu and the other Steelers must feel, not to mention other players on other teams on which there are a couple of players who can't behave themselves.

You can't sit grown, 250-300 lbs of man down until they learn some manners. At this point in life, it's doubtful they're going to learn anything new in the way of actual manners, and as far as punishment is concerned, you can't really penalize people for stating an opinion, even if the opinion is stupid and even a bit rude. This isn't a football-related issue, so he can't even really be fined, I don't think. He's punished himself enough by opening his mouth and revealing his lack of...common sense. Few people like a spoiled sport, and he's shown himself to be one. And we football fans have an incredibly long memory. Case in point: T.O..

I LOVE football. Just like every other profession that uses people to get the work done, there are some individuals who could have used some extra home training and an extra does of brains, but they are not representatives of the job.

Don't condemn the whole league full of players because of a few individuals' crazy behavior/atitudes.

I do see your point Jacquiem. It's just that I don't care for the sport and don't follow it on the sports pages, thus the only time, besides a big game, that it is in the mainstream news is when one of these nutjobs (your word) does something stupid like arrested for drugs, assault or worse. I suppose I'm generalizing and stereotyping, which is wrong, but guys like this certainly don't make me want to watch the game no matter how talented they are. It's only my opinion, just like he has his.

Is it a football related issue? No, not officially, but as a player and part of the champoinship team he is an ambassador of the sport and role model. He's doing it wrong and not only hurting himself but the game that obviously a lot of people love.
