Jaci,
oh well, I usually don't read long posts because they occur as rants of "blah blah blah, you're wrong cause I say so with lame, misleading terms; weak arguments; red herrings; and misinterpreting other posters blah blah. opinions presented as facts blah blah. and this is what you should do cause I say so blah blah cause I'm blah blah." End of how rant occurs for me.
I found the quotes to be humorous and thought provoking and it's too bad you can't make sense of them.
One final note....Churchill never made that quote about Democrats/liberals so I'll chalk up all the rantings as ignorance (not ignoramus-that's a play). Yes, reflection, revisiting, and re-evaluating may lead to something good. Keep growing!
Churchill was "a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35!” What a wise man he was.

Interesting...I was not aware this was misattributed to Churchill (the quote has actually been attributed to François Guizot but may have come from multiple sources). It took some looking to find the discrepancy...good to know!
"A conservative man is a man who just sits and thinks, mostly sits."
According to a 2005 survey the "conservative" side, particularly those who favor enterprise, had 41% of their political identity with incomes of over $75k per year. Liberals also had 41%, however, 30% of social conservatives and 10% of pro-government conservatives had such incomes whereas conservative democrats and disadvantaged democrats had 15% and 8%, respectively. I don't see how this "argument" is in any way a reflection of reality.
"A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs who, however, has never learned to walk forward."
Replace the word "conservative" with "space alien" and it has about as much validity and evidence.
"A liberal is a man or a woman or a child who looks forward to a better day, a more tranquil night, and a bright, infinite future."
Under what basis? Again, replace "liberal" with "cult member" and it means about the same thing.
I could go on and on. These "inspirational" quotes have as much impact as a cheerleader saying "Our team is the best! Go team!"
I could replace all the words "conservative" with "liberal" and vice versa and all of these quotes would have the same meaning. In other words, none.
An argument involves logically putting together facts to create an opinion based on the perceived connections of those facts. Saying "my ideology looks towards a better future!" is not an argument.
And none of these quotes helped explain why liberals and conservatives disagree with each other.

P.S. I apologize for the "excessive" length. By that logic I suppose reading past the first page of a book is "excessive reading".
Jaci,
your arguments and survey hold the same amount of water - none.
so if you get back to the name calling and disparaging moral judgments then we're really wasting time - nothing good will come of it. Find what inspires you and keep it close. Remember that it won't always be what inspires others.
Churchill was still an amazing man who accomplished great things. I am grateful that he dedicated his life and worked so hard for others.
He was a man of great words and most importantly - action.
He made a difference in the world.
And we can too.

Name calling? What names did I call anyone? Saying "these quotes have no relevance to the thread" is not name calling, last I checked. What on earth are you talking about?
Likewise, what moral judgments? I never once said "conservatives are right, liberals are wrong." I certainly never said "conservatives are good, liberals are bad." I simply stated that none of the quotes you mentioned A) give reason why liberals and conservatives react strongly to one another and B) give any sort of argument as to why one is better than the other. If you had made a bunch of quote saying "Conservatives are people who look to the future, liberals just sit around" I would have made the same exact arguments against it. You seem to be projecting what I mean so hard you can't possibly be reading anything I've written.
I notice you conveniently ignore the Churchill quotes about socialism and regulations. I agree Churchill was a great man...but there are plenty of great men and women who I disagree with. Alexander the Great was a great man but I don't believe it's our duty to conquer the world. Abraham Lincoln was a great man but I believe his decision to destroy states' rights instead of allowing the legal breakup of the Union was a poor decision. That doesn't mean he wasn't a great man!
But please, if you're going to call me out on name calling and moral judgments please make sure I'm actually doing so. Saying someone is wrong is not name calling or a moral judgment; if someone posted here that the War of 1812 happened in 1914 would I be name calling or making moral judgments by saying "Um, no"?
Earlier you said "blah blah blah, you're wrong cause I say so with lame, misleading terms; weak arguments; red herrings; and misinterpreting other posters blah blah. opinions presented as facts blah blah. and this is what you should do cause I say so blah blah cause I'm blah blah."
Isn't claiming I've used name calling and moral judgments, posting three pages of quotes stating your opinion as fact, and then completely misinterpreting everything I've written doing exactly this?
Please, explain to me how I've done any of these things. Read my posts and show me where I said that "conservatives are right, liberals are wrong." I believe I posted two separate explanations (a long and a short) in the beginning of this thread of why I believe that it is impossible for one to be wrong or right as ultimately your political views are judgment calls. You could even argue this is a liberal viewpoint!
Perhaps you're right, though...maybe mindless rhetoric instead of logical argument is truly what inspires people.
the issue is about emotionalism... different values, the need to be right and a lack of understanding of a viewpoint different to one's own... many of us assume we know far more than we do..and if one KNOWS, then, one assumes one must be right and those with other views must be wrong and therefore are not listened to .. niether side wins.
