If you were the President, what would you do to unite Americans? Do you think you could help Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians and those dastardly Political Independents (like me!) work more closer?

Or at least understand each other more. What say you? Ok you have the floor Ms/Mr. President:

Well spoken.

Would that mean while we are stalemated (the Liberals and Conservatives, etc) hidden powers will continue to erode our rights?

And could be the downfall of America? The ole United we stand and divided we fall?

boy on september 12th we sure were united, and it didn't take one thing from our government to bring that about. fast forward to now, where political ideology is a part of our identity - and we are conditioned to look at differences instead of seeking similarities.

i think in my generation we will see Americans unite.... against the government, not because of the government.

But see, that's a very divisive statement in itself, Steve. "Against the government" - what does that mean? Tim McVeigh was "against the government". You could mean something that most of us would agree with - that government needs to be transparent and accountable and that citizens need to make sure that it is - or you could mean something dangerous. I've not known you to make extremist statements on these boards so I am assuming you didn't mean that in the worst way, but someone else might when they say something like that. I think a lot of times both sides just talk right past each other.
I get along fine with a lot of thoughtful Republicans when we volunteer together or do other things in our church or community together. I think common goals are the key.

When liberals say they are "against" something it's ok...when anyone else does it they are compared with a murderer who blows up buildings...amazing

grace, i'm not sure how my statement would be viewed as extremist or divisive? i think our government is divisive! THEY are the ones that play the class warfare, THEY pit the hyphenated americans against each other, THEY are the ones that tell us what is good and bad for us.... seems a stretch to me to even hint to connect the dots from my post to mcveigh, and i'm not fond of the attempt.

think... tea parties, not bombs.

and can you define what a 'thoughtful repbulican' is?

The government does not need to play class warfare. It is a constant.

Noone can tell me what is good or bad for me because I am not listening. As for telling us what is good & bad for us... well noone does that more than the conservative right wing. They like to tell everyone what the right thing to do is... by their definition. I don't need a leader to tell me what is good or bad for me. They will never influence the way that I live my life.

Anyone that tells others how they should live is divisive. It is an unnecceasry overreach to try to do that.

i am sure that there are many people that need a leader in this country but I am not one of them.

I have a filter for what I listen to & don't listen to. That is why I am a moderate. I will hear a lot of things from a lot of people but only listen to what works for ME.

That is one reason why I don't view the media as biased. It does not effect the way that I think. I will only take from each source what I think makes sense. The other stuff is nothing.

I guess for me, I don't have special respect for authority or leadership. They are just people. I respect everyone equally. There are some people that deserve no respect at all but I avoid those people thus they are not a part of my life.

The governmant has very little control of my life. I am just a squirrel trying to get a nut in the artificial game that is the financial world. That world is constantly changing but my role in it will not. I will constantly have to make adjustments within it to get what I need.
