My original question still stands: how do we keep guns out of the hands of idiots?

Any suggestions?
Not possible ... Just look the downtown of many major cities ... Many idiots running around shooting at one another (see gang violence) ... Since many are underage and using illegal firearms, adding more laws or restrictions won't change things much other than to make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to obtain one.

Hmmmm...we don't have gangs running around like crazy people shooting each other at the rate ascitieslike Houston that allow guns in public.

Most New Yorkers are glad we have tight gun control....based on the laws that have tried to be passed in this state.

One this happened 40 miles outside of Houston. Second please cite your source for that statement about Houston but please be sure to take out those that moved to Houston after Katrina because crime did increase after they got that influx of people. Also TX is a conceal and carry state, I do not believe you are allowed to openly walk around Houston with your gun displayed.

I would have to disagree about most New Yorkers being glad about gun control if you are basing it on laws because that really is not a good basis.

Oh and I found this article regarding how the public opinion about support for new gun laws and such. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/6409891.html

Chicago has the tighest control in the nation (it and D.C.). And it has one of the highest rates of gun crimes, as does D.C.

Also, I suspect that high population density helps prevent gun violence. In other words, it's easier to police Manhattan because everyone is so tightly packed. Less so spread-out cities like Houston. Or D.C. for that matter.

I didn't think Houston or NYC was far from the average violent crime rate for major cities either way. I haven't looked in a while, though.

Realistically, gun bans have much effect. It's likely that not having a gun ban doesn't decrease your crime rate much. And we know for a fact that gun bans don't decrease gun crime rates.

Interestingly, the highest rises in statewide violent crime rates over the past decade have been in states near the southern border: TX, CA, AZ, NM, NV, LA, OK, and so on. Proximity to Mexico probably has a far greater impact on violent crime rates than gun control laws.

LOL...yesI was referring to the recent laws passed by Houston in response to the influx of gang activity from those that moved to Houston after Katrina.

...and the comment about New Yorkers was based on my own opinion, and the opinions of fellow New Yorkers like my friends, family and co-workers! Please don't stone me for not adding that to my original post (or at least only use very small pebbles for the stoning)...Sheesh!

But seriously, though I am a staunch supporter of everyone's right to bear arms, I certainly would not want gun laws to change here in NY. We have some crazy folks here who would probably love the opportunity to settle differences like the Old West!

Nope...New Yorkers do not need more guns on the street..that's for sure (ooops...forgot to add IMO!)

And now for the counter example ... Various parts of Los Angeles, downtown Anaheim/Santa Ana, etc. ... California has fairly tight gun control, it being a very heavily democratic state and we have very high crime rates ... There are quite a few areas I will NOT drive by, off-ramps that I will NOT use.

I would hazard to guess that most Californians would prefer to have more gun control ... However preventing someone from buying a pistol does nothing to prevent someone from illegally purchasing semi-automatic and automatic weapons.

Legend I apologize for my perceived tone. This has become a hot topic for me because of a couple PMs I received and because someone felt the need to trash me to others via pm and email.

I was not trying to jump on you I was asking a question because I know LEOs in Houston so I have a different take on crime there. Yes, the TX state legislature has passed several bills recently regarding gang violence.

I disagreed about the reason you felt most New Yorkers being glad about gun control because just because laws are getting passed does not mean "most" are in favor - IMO. That would mean in my state that outsiders would think that most of us are against conceal and carry because idiot Govenor vetoed two different bills(this is coming back to bite him because more and more people are starting to take advantage of the open carry law).
