Thanks, I couldn't think of the name.

On this subject, here is an email I received today from a colleague who is a hospital chaplain:

"There seems to be alot of panic and misleading information on this flu thing. Many politicians are also making irresponsible statements about it too. Here's what we're getting in the hopsital from our top medical people: it's just a strain of the flu, and it's treated the way any flu is treated. More people get sick from the regular seasonal flu than will get sick from this one, and more people die from the regular seasonal flu than will die from this one. The advice to wash hands and cover coughs is good. The best prevention is doing what one normally does to prevent the spread of any cold or flu. Key also--if it's not a fever, it's notH1N1. If it's flu symptoms and a fever, it MIGHT be H1N1, but the treatment is--stay home and get lots of rest, drink lots of fluid. "

Here's a copy and paste form my post in CSC...

If you are sick...stay home.

Wash your hands...FREQUENTLY!!!

If you are elderly and become ill, go to the doctor...don't wait!!

If you have small children, and they become ill, take them to the doctor...DON'T WAIT!!!

They make the vaccine right here in Pittsburgh. This is the area that "watches" the flu cases. The doctors have stated several times on the local news channels NOT to panic. They have the anectodote. They have a surpluss for the country. But you can't wait until it's already too late to get it!!!

Then I watch the world news...and they are all insane over it! It's a joke

Aye, as Dr. Paul said there are much worse things going around than this. As for me personally I am more afraid of the pink eye that is going around. Do not want!

I will do a double post from CSC too in case anyone would like this info:

I feel very concerned about this since there have been cases in California already and I work in a giant germ incubator (plus I'm a germphobe). I haven't been following this in the news, but instead going straight to the CDC site for info.

If anyone is interested in following this closely and hasn't already found this info, you might want to check out this link.

http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

I see that the pandemic alert has been raised again today to level 5. There is also info here from the WHO about what their pandemic alert scale means:

I guess I am getting both skeptical and cynical in my old age. Did anyone else read that this flu is unusual in that it has components of the European strain in it that is not even supposed to exist in the American continents? And the swine flu doesn't usually affect humans. Makes you wonder if this isn't a bioengineered strain-- like the FMD strain that the goverment used to depopulate cattle in the UK. Yep, my tin foil hat is definitely showing.

"Molecular analysis of the virus suggests that it is the product of a rare event called a "gene reassortment." In a reassortment, two distinct strains of virus infect the same cell. The viruses take over the cell's genetic machinery to make copies of themselves, mingling the genes of the two strains to create a new, essentially hybrid, strain. Six of the eight genes in the new strain are from the North American lineage of swine flu, but two are from the Eurasian lineage."

My question is was it released on accident or on purpose?

To suggest that this must be an act of bioterror is to be in denial of how nature operates. It is perfectly natural for pigs to be infected by influenza viruses that also use birds and humans as hosts. The nature of orthomyxoviruses (flu viruses) means that there are 8 parts that make the genome whole.

A pig can be simultaneously infected by two different influenza viruses. This is not unusual. Each virus has its own 8 different genome parts. Reassortment means those 8 different parts are assembled into new viruses in new combinations. Think of it like if you have 8 cards (ace to seven) that are hearts (a hearts virus) thrown in a pile with the same cards that are clubs (clubs virus). You need to have the 8 different cards to make the virus that will get out and infect other cells, but you randomly pick hearts or clubs to make up the new set of 8. This is the newly reassorted virus and it is a mixture of pig, bird and human viruses.

Please point me to published information about the British government releasing a bioengineered strain of FMD so I can debunk it for you. I worked at the government research lab that conducted testing of clinical samples from farms during the outbreak 2001, and I can assure you that nobody in their right mind would do that intentionally as a government strategy. That cost tax payers a huge amount of money (for the slaughter, biosecurity measures and compensation for the farmers) with absolutely no benefit to the country. I know there was a more recent outbreak, and I believe that the source was suspected to be (edited) a containment problem at a facility (owing to the age of the facility and possibly some human error, last I read) and not to any deliberate release.

I did not mean to say that the British government intentionally released the disease, but that they used the disease to accomplish an agenda. Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is not a particularly bad disease. Most animals survive it and then have immunity to that strain, and it rarely affects humans. The disaster that happened in England was caused not by FMD but by the UK government because they wanted to appease a few exporters who wanted to ship their cattle to the USA. FMD didn’t kill oversix millionEnglish cattle. The UK government did.

As to H1N1 (as I believe 'swine flu' is now being called), I just find it odd that two of the eight parts of this virus are of Eurasian lineage.
