All of us at one time or another have seen or heard a Presidential speech be it on the State of the Union or some other matter. These speeches are usually followed by an hour or more of commentary on what was really said. I do not know how you feel about this type of commentary but personally I think my hearing is really good. I also consider myself above average intelligence. I take offense to these commentators who try to tell us what the President or any other official actually meant. What is your opinion?

I agree. I don't need their opinion to formulate mine.

It's much cheaper for the stations to air the "news", as opposed to actual programming. That's why the 6 o'clock news now starts at 4, and has turned into3 hours of the same thing over and over hour after hour.

I don't mind hearing opinions of commentators and focus groups, but I used to hate it when they'd go to the "spin room" after presidential debates, etc., and talk to their campaign chairs. We already know that each will say that their candidate (a) won, (b) appeared the most presidential, and (c) is what the American people want, yadda yadda yadda. So why air it?

I think it all depends on the commentators - I don't really like the after-show for most speeches/state of the unions/debates. But since I listen to talk radio, the next day I usually listen to someone that will dissect the speech and I find that informative and helpful. But again, it just depends on the person doing the comments. I am a fan of one particular commentator because his focus is clarity not agreement and I really learn a lot.

I also like reading the speeches. It is just like anything that you read and listen to over again, you see or hear things that you may not have noticed or paid attention to the first time around.

That's a good point, Lizzie - I too find reading the transcripts the following day to be a helpful exercise.

I almost always watch them on PBS -- much more low key and much less politicking.

I do enjoy listening to some commentary, though. I don't consider it to be a matter of someone else telling me what the speech meant or how I should interpret it, though. Rather; it's a way to get a sense of what the varying perspectives are on the issues -- some of which I will agree with and some of which I will not. And, some of them are quite well-informed about the issues.

If someone doesn't care to listen to the after-speech commentary, though, it is of course very easy to change the channel or hit the "off" button.
