Can I tell my stepson this? So, if he goes to college first, how exactly do you become an officer when you join the military after? Don't you still have to work your way up from Private?

While enlisted can become commissioned officers, it is not through the traditional chain of advancement ... so no, he wouldn't start as a Private. There are programs (like Green To Gold, or attending Officer Candidate School after enlisting) that allow for non-traditional movement into the officer ranks.

ROTC is a good route for officers (pays for college) but he'll need to keep his grades up (they have strict GPA standards). After a certain point, I believe two years into the program, if he fails to complete the program he'll be required to serve as an enlisted for a few years.

Military academy (West Point, etc.).

Officer Candidate School (will need to have completed a Bachelors degree for admittance).

Direct commission (for JAG, chapelains, doctors).
Yup, that about explains it. That was a whole lotta military talk that most people don't get though.

Will your son have to go in as a private? If he gets his Bachelors first, no. Getting your degree prior to going in is the best route.I believe that there is an option to repay your college if you join as an officer (or it might be the complete opposite , I know it's one or the other lol, I was enlisted so I can't really tell you for sure. That's a question for a recruiter).

Going about it this way and going through OCS would start him off as a 2nd Loutinent (butter bar) which is the lowest rank of officers. He would not have to go enlisted. If he did choose the enlisted side (enlisted have more fun) he would start off as a E-4 Specialist (which is about half way up the enlisted ranks) with a bachelors. If your son is interested I would suggest going and talking to a recruiter. But becareful because I don't think that officers count towards the recruiters monthly goals, so they might try to pressure you to get him to go enlisted instead of officer.

And a side note, your degree doesn't really matter what type of job you get as an officer, they will put him where the army needs him (unless you are a doctor, lawyer or priest). I had an officer that was in the Air Defense branch and had a degree in Dance. LoL Yeah, go figure. If you find a college that gives you a degree in "underwater basket weaving" you are still good. Just gotta have that 4 year degree.

They have some sort of loan repayment option included in the potential bonuses for enlisting, I think ... that might be what you're thinking of ...

ROTC seems the best route to me ... can go to a lot of real quality schools.

Oh, and he stated to me on a separate note that ebay is GONE. He'll outlaw it. They steal toys at Christmas and drive up the prices. He's referring to last year's ebay run on Bakugon.

Thanks DW & TP! I will let him know thathe has more options rather than just simply enlisting. I'll leave out the part that the enlisted have more fun, though.

That's cute, Saul. Who do you think he'd choose as his running mate?
How about Cookie Monster? I always thought he'd make a good leader. He has a clear vision (more cookies) and he's blue!

Actually, he'd probably choose the dog, Nicki. He's a Pembroke Welsh Corgi who's creepy smart.

I've been training dogs my whole life, and we had a kennel when I was a kid, did shows and everything.

So I start training this Corgi to heel. That's usually one week. He gets it right off the first night.

So I figure, heck, try sitting. He picks it up the second time I issue the command.

I figure, dang, see if he'll stay. He stays.I walked all around him.

I say, "Down," show him what to do, and he's got it. I run him through a few figure eights, heel, sit, stay, down, come, down, heel sit.

The FIRST NIGHT! I kid you not. I've never seen anything like it. He looks at you like he's trying to figure out what you're saying. It's creepy.

Anyway, the dog is probably his running mate. He's smarter than most politicians. Not one of those guys can heel right.
