very, very unfortunate. could just as easily have been a drunk/stoned/texting driver.

immigration is a big problem, for sure. step number one has got to be securing our north and south borders. then i guess we'll have to figure out how to handle the illegals that are already here. it's a toughie for sure!

is there a difference between sobriety checkpoints, and one that checks for citizenship?
Wait a second. I thought you wanted smaller government. Do you know how many people they would have to hire to secure our borders?

And they DO have checkpoints to check for illegal immigrants. I ran across them quite regularly in Western/Southern Texas and New Mexico.

Why can't one of the missions of the U.S. military be to protect our borders? You'll probably reference the Posse Comatatus Act and that's fine. But if we were actually at war with say the Canadians (just an example - don't get excited) wouldn't the military deploy along the border?

Well, how many presidents have declared a war on drugs? Now the war on terrorism? So deploy the troops along the southern border and stop the illegal immigrants and curtail flow of drugs.

If any aircraft encroaches on restricted airspace around D.C. military aircraft is scrambled to intercept it. Where's the relief from the Posse Comatatus Act in that situation?

Thoughts?

Your right, I was gonna reference the Posse Comatatus Act. You can't compare a declaration of war (which we have not had since WWII) to illegal immigration.

So the solution; let's just declare a war on illegal aliens then lol. That seems to be the loop hole to everything now a days. As for scrambling jets in the DC area; lets remember that it is NOT a state, not to mention the CO of the military lives there. The military is authorized to protect itself and it's leaders.

Oh, and presidents can't declare war on anything so I could really care less how many have declared a war on well...anything. That is on Congress. I'd also note that the war on drugs and terrorism is not an official "war". Our culture has just became so obsessed with war it is nothing more than a catch phrase.

tweet, I'm really sorry to hear about the accident involving your daughter's friend. A tragedy, no doubt about it.

Last week, the wife of my daughter's friend, a 26 year old teacher at our middle school, was killed when her car was struck by a landscape work truck that ran a red light. Both the driver and passenger of the truck were Mexican illegal immigrants and were arrested at the scene.

This accident caused a local public uproar about immigration reform.

Today's Philadelphia Inquirer ran a story about police exceeding their authority arresting illegal immigrants. (I don't know if this is related to last week's incident.) It seems, by law, police cannot question or arrest someone for issues relating to immigration status until after an arrest for another crime, then can they be turned over to federal authorities for prosecution of an immigration violation. Police cannot question anyone about immigration status and arrest them for an immigration violation. They don't have the authority. In addition, it seems, to do so would imply that profiling was employed to question their status and their rights (constitutional?) would be violated.

What a country, eh? Sneak in illegally, enjoy all the benefits, medical care, schools, in-state tuition!, etc., etc., and the only authority with jusisdiction is the INS. Not local police, not the sherriff, not the city police, not state police,...NOBODY!

How can we put a dent in the illegal immigrant problem if all these law enforcement agencies have their hands tied behind their backs?

End of rant.

BTW, the passenger of the truck committed no crime and was subsequently released.
What kind of Carp is that!

I think the only immigration reform that is needed is for the INS to do their assigned activity. That is a sensitive topic out here in Socal. And it is a don't get me started topic for me.

How is it that people with no legitimate citizenship status have more rights than people that are citizens? Not to mention the fact that if you are born here, regardless of the parents legal status are automatically granted citizenship.

I agree but you have to admit it's easier said than done. I don't see why all law enforcement authorities can't work together and cooperate on this issue.

The border needs to be sealed. Yeah, it's a monumental task. Maybe a huge infrastructure project as part of the stimulus package that will actually put people to work. Something along the lines of the great wall of China maybe?

Because the Great wall did such a great job of keeping the mongolians out. I think it actually backfired on China didn't it?
