.
AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry, joining a handful of his fellow Southern Republican leaders, said Thursday that he was rejecting $556 million in federal stimulus money for unemployed Texans because it had too many strings attached.
.
...
.

"That is why I am so concerned about the belief that has gained a foothold in our national consciousness that the best and only way to solve our nation's problems is to drown them with taxpayer dollars," said {Texas Governor Rick} Perry, announcing his decision at a Houston hardware store.
.
~~~~~
.
The response from (D):
.
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a Democrat who chairs the National Governors Association, called Perry's decision to reject the unemployment funds "stunning."
.
"It's a terrible call. It is based on politics," he said, adding that while the federal stimulus does require some states to add coverage, it doesn't require the changes to be permanent. Lawmakers could roll back the expansion in two years, though they are often reluctant to take away benefits from voters.
.
"How do you sit across the table from a part-time worker working three part-time jobs, doing his best to keep his family afloat, didn't get health care, didn't get anything for it, all three of his jobs collapsing?" said Rendell, meeting with reporters in Washington.
.
"What does that make you? Does that make you a good Christian?" he asked. "There comes a time when the hurt that individuals are facing becomes paramount over whether I'm going to have a budget problem three years down the road."
.
~~~
.

From Saul: I bolded that last part! Look how he admits that three years from now, we'd have a budget problem, but let's not think long-term, let's think immediate-term, even if it causes "a budget problem three years down the road."
.
~~~
.
Responded Perry:
"This was pretty simple for us. Keep things going like they're going in Texas," said the governor, who has touted the state's job-creation rate as the economy has soured. "We can take care of ourselves. And we do not need any more strings from Washington attached to programs."
.
~~~~
.
From Saul: Not sure what the verdict is on the other $16B that Texas is set to receive on other projects, though. We'll see. CA said they'd take whatever monies we don't want. Some of the money might be the normal federal taxes we get back anyway, and not just tax loans with hardcore (D) demands.

Hmmmmm....last I read, Texas declined the money that would extend unemployment payments because they said they did not want to responsible for the extra extension that would have to be paid by Texas....or something like that. I'm not up on all the 'politics-speak' as you are, but that is the gist of what I understood.

However, they did accept the other monies offered to them.

BTW Saul....do you ever have anything else but politics on your brain? This is a dating site you know!

Just teasin'....as they say in NYC..."If it makes you happy, DO YOU!"...

I read after I posted that we'd accepted ~$16bil in federal tax refunds (less federal handling fees) for our roads and schools and such.

It's "stimulus" money, but in reality, it's a loan against future tax collections. So, for instance, we're getting a $16bil "stimulus," but we'll have to pay $40bil in federal taxes -- in the future -- to cover the costs (less federal handling fees).

I ~hate~ credit card debt, and that's all this is, with a HUGE interest rate -- no interest, no payments until 2011, as Obama says, so don't worry, it's good.

And I have lots on my mind. This politics stuff is just one thing to keep the voices from taking over, a momentary distraction.
