Tell us about someone you like from the "opposing party" and what you like about him/her. What could they do to be a postive example to the rest of their party?

Ok I will be the first to jump in here, Herb Kohl, senior Senator from Wisconsin. I may not like his politics but he does put forth the effort to listen to his constituents even though he may not follow what they ask all the time. He also does not use his personal life for political use. He also uses most of his own money for campaigns.

My own senator John Warner, who just retired after a long and respected career. I didn't always agree with his positions (and so didn't vote for him), but I respected him and saw him as an honorable man. I had the pleasure of seeing him give a college graduation speech in 2007 and found him to be both charming and forward thinking as he anticipated leaving the Senate. He will be missed in the Senate as one of the "Old Guard" who understood the importance of bipartisanship.

Both senators from Maine, Olympia Snowe and Susan Colllins -- neither is afraid to vote her principles (and with her constituents) instead of pure party politics. They are both moderates, too, which is a declining group these days (although essential for finding common ground).

Orrin Hatch -- I don't like much of his politics at all, but he is also a longstanding good model of a "Gentleman Senator" (he and Ted Kennedy are best friends, despite their very different political positions). I gained respect for him when I worked on the Hill years ago and had the opportunity to see him in action.

There are certainly others, but that's a quick list.

I also like Jon Tester, jr Senator from Montana. He seems to truly mean what his says and is very open about his schedule and the dealings of his office. To date I think he is still the only senator or congressman to post their daily schedule on their website. He and his wife also still run the family farm and have made it an organic farm. Ok, and he is for the 2nd ammendment, works hard for veterens, and has worked to improve Northern border security.

Another person is Caroline Kennedy, yes I know she is not a politician but she is very much in the political realm. I may not like her politics all the time but she has worked very hard to improve schools in New York City, put raising her children ahead of career ambitions, and has put up with more attacks than she should have had too when she said she would be interested in former Senator Clinton's seat. She finally jumps into the political ring the way others have wanted and pushed for years and she gets slammed.

A question like this is probably going to result in people just naming their favorite RINOs or DINOs (Republican/Democrat In Name Only) of the opposite party.

I prefer the politicians of either party who we don't necessarily hear about or could name, and who don't hog the limelight but just go up there to do their job to the best of their ability, following their constituency and their own hopefully good judgment and not doing any outright damage to the Republic or exacerbating the culture wars.

Even so, I find nothing wrong with the much maligned bogey of "partisanship", and indeed I think it's absolutely necessary for the free airing of ideas in a congressional system, lest we lapse into an effectively one-party fascist state.

Following ThePriestess' line of approach, and going here SOLELY on looks, on the Democrat/Liberal side: maybe Jennifer Granholm and Stephanie Herseth, Janeane Garofalo pre-anorexia and tattoos, Maureen Dowd and Ariana Huffington could do the twin thing for me if they were dolled up (lol!). On the Republican/Conservative side: Sarah Palin, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, maybe Laura Ingraham and Michelle Malkin, definitely Sara Evans, former MTV VJ Kennedy, Janine Turner, former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino (yowsa!).

Okay, cue the disdain from TP.

C'mon, guys; if Lizard and I can name names of politicians, you can come up with one or two, too.

How about naming someone in government/politics or someone who is a nationally-knownactivist working on and making a difference for an issue you think is important? (Before you all respond "Angelina Jolie," you know that's not what I mean!)

Tinderox - Surely you don't consider Senators Warner or Hatch to be RINOs! Both they and their constituents would be pretty shocked to hear that...lol. Likewise, Lizard's choice of Senator Kohl is in no way a DINO. In fact, he gets moderate to high liberal ratings and is solidly in the middle of the pack for the current crop of Democratic senators...
