As a conservative in the United States, here is what being a conservative means to me:

As a conservative, I believe in less government, not more. I think the Founding Fathers had it right when they mentioned to be wary of bigger government.

As a conservative, I believe that lower taxes promote more economic growth.

As a conservative, I believe that when the government passes a budget, it should be balanced and fiscally responsible. I think that having a deficit is bad in the long-term.

As a conservative, I believe that free market economics should be first, though companies that have market dominance should be regulated.

As a conservative, I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Y'all, I don't really mind if so-called civil unions allow two men or two women to raise a child, but I believe that the concept of marriage is sacred, and that it should be between a man and a woman.

As a conservative, I believe that the second amendment, with our right to bear arms, allows us to both purchase a gun and wear sleeveless shirts. I don't support every American getting a bazooka or machine gun, but I do support that we all have the rightto purchase a gun if we want to. While I personally will probably not purchase a gun in my lifetime, I have no problems with guns at all. Some restrictions make sense, as in waiting 15-30 days, but too many restrictions might cause conflict with the second amendment.

As a conservative, I believe that every eligible citizen has the right to vote.

As a conservative, I believe that everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

As a conservative, I believe in God. I believe that good old-fashioned values are important, like family, church, knowing right from wrong, andso forth.

As a conservative, I believe that abortion is morally wrong. I'm not going to get into the abortion debate here, as that could be debated endlessly (and has). Go check out Wikipedia's abortion controversy debate if you'd like to read more.

As a conservative, I believe that we should have a strong military, and that anyone who serves their country that way is worthy of respect.

Some things that I believe in that might be against the grain:

I believe that evolution happened, but I can reconcile that with my faith. I don't subscribe to the belief that the universe was created 5000 years ago. Hello, dinosaurs, anybody? Light from stars? Carbon dating? Science is just a means to study God's creation. And go read the Wikipedia articles about the Big Bang if you like astronomical stuff.

I believe that the government should be involved with making sure our food, water, and medicine are safe.

I'm not too keen with the whole neoconservative policy of promoting democracy in other places. I believe in passively helping democracy flourish, but in cases where our security is threatened, then I would accept a more active approach (though I still don't like it).

I believe in seeing the other side's point of view and trying to understand it. Even though I'm a Republican, for example, I don't let myself vote blindly Republican. There are times when I vote Democrat, based on the research I've done on a candidate.

I don't believe in universal health care. I think that would be a mistake.

And you know what? I don't think that these values I hold are solely the property of conservatives. There are people out there who might agree with some of these that call themselves moderates or liberals, or what have you.

The operative word has been italicized above.

I believe that what our fore fathers said was that there should not be just one state instituted church but they were not absent of faith. Research early textbooks and educational standards. Look at the carvings at the Supreme Court.

Otherwise what Mr. Right has most of what I would have written.

I would say one more thing is that I would like to know why in this age of easy travel we have made being a Senator or Congressman a full time job or something that someone should do as a career(and that would knock out several republicans from office as well as dems)

Right. That's why I think the government should only recognize civil unions. Let churches deal with mariage.

Yeah or just hold them accountable.

Where is Rocchio to chime in on this one? He's got some interesting things to say about the religious views of the founding fathers. Rocchio? Let's see if he'll magically appear.

My $.02:

-minimalist government (a la Nozick)

-secular government

-capitalism as a fundamental economic system (tempered with minimalist government)
