It will make Americans abroad safer. For as long as Guantanamo Bay was open, the world (especially the anti-American faction) could point to it and say "Look they do not follow the rule of Law, national or international".

If following a moral code and upholding the Constitution (which the president has sworn an oath to do) ends up making anti-American factions happy, then that's a hit we'll just have to take.

To do otherwise is to return to days when the Constitution meant nothing.

Steve - they are not exactly freeing the prisoners and releasing them into the countryside here in the U.S. Each case will be reviewed and determinations made for whether and how to try the individual, keeping in mind national security interests. It will take some time to figure out the particulars of how that will be done. Doing what we preach others should do (and what we insist on for our own citizenry) does increase our credibility as a Nation, which I think is a valuable commodity.

No, closing gitmo will not make you "safer" per se. Most Americans aren't really informed with the going ons there. Most fail to realize how much is actually kept from the public. You can only speculate from the vague information given through our media.

And yes, good international relations should be a big concern of ours. Should we resort to what North Korea has done and completely isolate ourselves from the rest of the world? Remind me again, how is that working out for them?

What days were those exactly? The days FDR was President?

He knew that, he was just making a snide comment. They are still pouting over their boys loss on election day.

so, keeping gitmo open is against the constitution, how?

i know i'm sometimesdense, but there must be something major i'm missing here. it has got to be a super-important thing, since it's day 2 for our new commander in chief.

Apply for a Top Secret SCI security clearance. You might not be missing as much then.
