Hearme, Legend, CG,

Thanks for talking me down. I'm a bit of a news junkie and can be fanatic in my political beliefs. I think we all can be that way. I don't begrudge anyone ~their~ beliefs, but I react strongly when antagonized.

Yesterday I saw this bumper sticker that read, "Buck Fush"

Oh, man. Talk me down, talk me down. I don't mind seeing the big O displayed-- support your team -- but don't disrespect MY team.

I'm already upset about Obama -- and that's my right -- but I don't in real life go around saying, "The US is an Obamanation!" Say that out loud. Remember Saul came up with that when you see it on a bumper sticker. It's offensive -- witty as hell -- but offensive. Why be offensive?

I talk politics with guys from India, Israel,China, all over Europe, Japan, Native Americans, Hispanics, and yes, plenty of black folks, some who were born in the same country as O's daddy, Muslims, Jews, Christians alike. I get a wide swath of opinion, owing to the huge diversity of those in my field of work.

None of them trash-talk Bush. I don't trash-talk Obama. We have a discussion, civilized, and we both try to learn something.

Then I read this dig on Reagan, and that set me off. I didn't comment on the other posts, like the one Neardc started regarding the inauguration and what all you're doing.

They weren't digging on Bush. Celebrate. You earned a victory.

It's the trash-talking that bugs me. It's the unsportsmanlike conduct. I'm from UT Austin, and when I see someone do that upside-down hook-em horns and dis my school, then I understand why gangsters shoot each other for throwing signs.

It's because you're disrespecting something in which I deeply believe.

I could've gone to Obama's inauguration, no problem. I might even have enjoyed it. And if I'd been next to the folks who booed Bush, it might not have been so peaceful.

Show some respect is all. You three girls tried to talk me down when I returned fire, and I thank you for that. It helped, believe me. I'm calmer for it.

I just hope the Bush-bashing can finally stop. Hell, I'm a Texan, too, with that same goofy drawl that's drawn ridicule on Bush, and I'm just as much a redneck go-it-alone cowboy maverick as him. I have the same backbone he has, and respect the guy for being one of the most disrespected presidents in history, who left a nice note for his rival, and a clean office.

Anyway, to everyone, it's not nice to disrespect someone else's belief, call them liars, ridicule them for what they feel, belittle them for their Texas accent.

It riles the f.ck out of me personally, and it's that riling that got me going on that Gobama thread.

Many of us who support Obama agreed that booing Bush was in extremely poor taste and created a really sour note in what was, for us, a beautiful day. It's hard be in the minority - I've lived in red states for the past 35 years (how did I manage to do that??). It's tough to hear your candidate dissed.

And I agree about rude bumper stickers (although those who sport them will loudly recite the First Amendment).

There's no reason not to support your team, as you call it. Democracies need a loyal opposition and, let's face it, neither party intends to suspend the Constitution.

Thanks for the act of contrition (if I may call it that) --

Saul; you are one of the main reasons I enjoy these boards so much. Passion is a good thing; standing up for what you believe in and feel passion for is a good thing. Respect is a good thing. Sometimes there is too much passion; and that means that a civilized discussion is not possible; and in order to walk out of there the bigger man; you have to agree to disagree. I know (height and weight and any other jokes aside ppl) you are a very big man, Saul.

Passion is one thing but rudeness is another. I had a high opinion of Saul for posting this explanation until he altered one of my posts in another thread.

Not funny. Not fair play. Not "big" of you. Quite disillusioning, actually.

Oh, hey, I missed this. Your post gives me hope that we can all reach across the aisles on some issues.

And I got that same drawl myself. I sorta worked for GWB (state employee during his tenure as Gov), and my dad reminds me of him. My mom's best friend is GHWB's gal Friday (his assistant).

Do I like his policies? I think you know the answer. But I'm all with you on playing nice.

I don't know if this is off-topic or not. Sorry if this is.

I listened to the letter the Bush twins wrote to the Obama daughters on the news the other night. I thought it was marvelous and such a kind gesture.

If you haven't heard or read the letter, you might want to look it up.

Saul~

Some of us find that accent adorable and sexy.

I am one of those that gets very irate about Pres. Bush bashing because I did not bash the previous president despite having great cause to do so.

I am hoping that the bashing will stop now, but do not hold my breath.

We'll see if I can play nice. I'm sarcastic, so that doesn't always come off as kind and gentle. I try, but I'm just not timid.

I will say I'll try very hard to stick to non-personal attacks, based on issues and without a bunch of hypotheticals, and not generalize to the liberal populace. Again, it's hard to play within those boundaries, but it's the right place to play.

I liked the letter too, especially the last line that read, "Never forget who your dad 'really' is".

Hi Saul....yes...you were a bit harsh at times, and that comment about Obama's mother really bothered me because I've read so many of your other posts on severalother threads, and always respected your insightful advice.

But, I use humor to diffuse potential confrontations, sprinkled with a bit of sarcasm and dry wit...which helps me to calm down when chomping at the bit! Every time I read one of your posts about Obama, I kept wishing for the "nice" Saul to re-emerge. You are fully entitled to your opinion, as are others as well. But, as you say...bashing hurts...no matter whom is doing the bashing, which is why I make an effort to try not to do it.

Thanks for the post....and remember...Im a Republican too...just maybe akinder, gentler one!
