I found the "My fellow citizens" to be a bit jarring. Guess I'm used to the Presidents that I remember always starting their speeches with "My fellow Americans..."

It doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well, does it? I think perhaps that it was deliberately chosen to go with the theme of much of the rest of the speech, regarding working together and being in community together. Perhaps he sought to remind us of our responsibilities as citizens.
I liked "citizens" for precisely the reason you name, grace. We hear lots of "rights" talk but not nearly enough "responsibilty" talk - the responsibilities we have as part of a collective.

[full disclosure: I'm working on a book about empathy as a public management value, so I know I'm biased.....]

Your book sounds fascinating, CC! Do tell! And, you mentioned you were an undergrad with Jon Stewart? That would have been W & M? My daughter's waiting for an acceptance letter from them - it's nail-biting time here!

I wish your daughter lots of luck!! Didn't you say she'd done a summer program there?

W&&M didn't accept my oldest daughter, despite the fact that her father, my sister, my mother, and I all went there (grrrrrr). But W&M wasn't top of her list, so she wasn't too upset - and she said it was the nicest rejection letter she'd ever gotten!! My youngest has been accepted to Carleton (in Minnesota) -her first choice -so she's in full senior slump right now.

I only knew Jon Stewart in passing -he was a few years younger than I and his name was Jon Liebowitz - he played on the soccer team and I remember knowing that he was an outrageously funny guy- I think the soccer teammay still givea "Liebo" award every yearin his honor.

as for the book, I'm looking at whether media portrayals appear to affect the amount of empathy we give disaster victims - since as humans we tend to be less empathetic to people we feel are in a bad situation because it was their "fault". The publisher I've used in the past has decided to suspend several of its lines (due to the economy and fewer purchases made by university libraries) sonow Ineed to find another publisher. But, I've been awarded research leave all next academic year to work on it - yay!! I'd like to be able to publish it as a book but I can always do a series of articles, as well. I'm just an old-fashioned academic that way - I want to see my ideas in a book, not just as articles.

That's wonderful that you were awarded the leave, CC. And congrats to your daughter on her acceptance to Carleton! I hear it has a terrific reputation.

Yes, Caroline did do a summer program at W & M last year, and she will be interning under one of their doctoral students for two weeks this summer. He's doing an archaeological dig at an old estate in the Williamsburg area, and has invited interested undergrads to come help out in two-week stints; staying with his family in a farmhouse on the property. Should be interesting!

OK, I'm way off topic here. So, on the lighter side of the inaugural, was anyone else surprised that the Obamas walked part of the parade route? I expected that they might for a brief moment, but it was more than I think anyone anticipated. David Gergen, who was on CNN, said he thought it was truly brave. I'm sure the Secret Service were having a fit - I thought a number of those guys looked very grim!
