If at all possible, it would be nice if this thread didn't get hijacked with "how much I hate Obama".

Here's my question. Okay, I can see a campaign for election needing money and we all know he did a stellar job getting donations.

He is now elected. Why are they still asking for donations? To what use is that money to be put?

Does anyone know?

Obama 2012 and because I believe they can use some of the funds for inaugaration festivities because they can be written off as campaign fund raisers. I am not positive and am waiting to for a reply from my buddy in DC for confirmation, but he might be too busy packing for his new job.

I was thinking that he might be trying to help retire Hillary's campaign debt? Or it might be the inaugaration. Better private contributions than tax dollars for some of that, I think. I mean the balls, parties, etc., not the actual swearing-in.

Ah I had not thought of that. No doubt that was negotiated since she was about $8-$10 million in the hock.

I hadn't even considered 2012 but I am sure you guys are right about that.

FYI, fundraising for the inauguration is separate from campaign fundraising, but there is certainly fundraising going on now for that. Public funds are used for things like providing safety (police, etc.), but not for activities like balls and concerts; those are covered by private fundraising.

That being said, he can use the leftover funds for pretty much anything other than personal use. However, contributions to Hillary are restricted to the standard limits (there is a separate campaign to raise funds to retire her debt and Obama has urged his supporters to donate to that...).

Did you get a specific solicitation? What did it say?

(This may show up twice; first attempt was moderated...)

I did, neardc, and it referenced the inaugural committee. But, it was sent from Obama for America; just as they were during the campaign. I think you're probably right about Hillary, but this solicitation was a little unclear.

Oh well....I am looking forward to Obama taking the oath in any case!

This is part of what my email said:

We need to select 9 more supporters like Cynthia, and I would love for you to be one of them.

Make your donation of $5 or more before midnight on Thursday, January 8th.

Supporters like you made this historic moment possible.

You gave your passion and hard work to this movement, and you brought millions of new people into the political process. Thanks to you, this campaign was open to more people than any in history, and we're counting on you to do the same for the Inauguration.

You could be there to celebrate your amazing accomplishments and give a strong start to the change you fought so hard for.

Please make a donation of $5 or more and help us celebrate everything you did to make this day possible:
