Barack Obama's campaign promise not to take away our guns is a lie.

[The NRA calls] people who support gun control cowards, as mentioned..
I'm an NRA Life Member, and a Gun Owners of America life member.

I believe in and support the Second Amendment.

I strongly dislike stereotypes about people who choose to own guns. I think people who cling to stereotypes about gun-owners are prejudiced, bigoted, small-minded people.

I don't want criminals to have guns. But gun control laws do not prevent criminals from having guns, because criminals simply ignore them.

If you do not wish to exercise your right to own firearms, that is your choice: it's a right, not an obligation.

I will assume your decision not to own firearms is as carefully considered as my decision to own firearms. I will not attribute small-mindedness or irrationality to you; I bear you, a non-gun-owner, no animosity or condescension.

In return, I ask that whether you choose to own firearms or not, you do not interfere with the right of other law-abiding people to do so.

So you're saying everyone should carry a gun with them everywhere they go, just incase someone else is carrying a gun? And carrying the gun will make me brave... because my gun is bigger than everyone else's? Or because everyone else doesn't have a gun?

With your logic you probably don't see the irony that by carrying a gun everywhere you go to alleviate suspcion of all you meet, you are infact showing a greater fear than those that choose to go into in life unarmed.

And a further irony is that, by you carrying a gun everywhere into an otherwise unarmed populace or situation you are generating the fear that a terrorist would hope to achieve. Fear of an uneducated, narrow-minded gun toting fundamentalist whose only solution to an argument or a situation that upsets them is a gun

In all armed conflict situations I would prefer a military or protective services trained profesional to handle the situation. Someone trained to use a fire arm and is mentally prepared for "terrorist" engagements, not some Dirty Harry movie addict who shoots at paper targets on the weekends at a range and then on holidays shoots at beer bottles with his drunk buddies.
I strongly suspect your post was just a troll, but just in case it wasn't, I'll respond seriously.

To my knowledge, the most comprehensive examination of the effect of firearm laws is still the 1997 Lott and Mustard study: Lott, John R., and Mustard, David B., Crime, Deterrence, and Right-to-Carry Concealed Handguns , J. of Legal Studies, vol.26, n.1, pp.1-68 (Jan. 1997).

Based on the data, that study reached several conclusions:
  1. The rate at which people who are licensed to carry concealed commit crimes is astoundingly low—much lower than the general population. This means that the stereotype of gun owners who carry concealed being hot-tempered and quick-triggered is simply false.
  2. Restricting the ability of normal law-abiding people to carry concealed firearms increases crime. While we cannot know with 100% surety why this happens, the most accepted explanation is that criminals are emboldened when they know their potential victims are unarmed.
  3. It is not necessary for all people—or even a majority—to carry concealed in order to deter crime. Simply the possibility that potential victims might be armed seems to be enough to deter criminals.
  4. Shooting sprees are much more likely to occur in areas where people are prohibited from carrying concealed weapons, such as schools and office buildings. While the people who commit such crimes are clearly disturbed, whether they are consciously aware of it or not, these people avoid going on shooting sprees in locations where they might encounter people carrying concealed who can shoot back.

Lott wrote a follow-up book based on the study: More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun-Control Laws . Whether you are pro-gun or anti-gun, I strongly recommend reading the book, as Lott turns what could be a very dull subject (loads and loads of data) into an interesting and entertaining read.

(The book is available from Amazon and other retailers. If you don't want to pay to read it, your local library almost certainly will have it.)
