It's time to create what will be, by far, my most controversial post.

That's right -- Proposition 8, the one that defines marriage between a man and a woman, passed today -- 52% to 48%. So why did it pass? Was it those evil, white, bigoted phobes who supported McCain? Nope. Whites were slightly opposed. Hispanics? Nope-- split close to down the middle, but the overwhelming support base? That's right... all the black voters that came out to support Barack Obama made Proposition 8 a reality in California.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/uselection2008/barackobama/3388430/Barack-Obama-may-have-helped-California-Proposition-8-gay-marriage-ban-pass.html

"Around 70 per cent of the African-American voters who overwhelmingly backed Mr Obama also approved Proposition 8, helping pass the controversial ballot measure despite a small majority of whites voting against the ban on same-sex unions. Hispanic and Asian voters were split on the issue.

The state's black turnout jumped to 10 per cent of the electorate, up from 6 per cent in 2004, as voters inspired by Mr Obama flocked to the polls for the first time. The Democratic candidate took the state with 61 per cent of the popular vote.

Although the president-elect opposed the gay marriage ban, it appears his supporters may have helped pass the measure that was vociferously opposed by many white Democrats."

This can truly show you how "open-minded" some liberals can be.

Define Irony: A left wing leader that was supposed to "Bring America Together" being the major factor in causing a divide.

God Bless America!

Without having read any of the stats or deeply analyzing this topic as I'm sure there will be lots of posters here. I think had this prop been put on the ballot ten years ago the results would have been astoundingly different. Regardless of how I voted on this proposition and how I feel that this proposition passedI am quite proud that we have made tremendous progress in acknowledging same sex relationships.

Yes they are hurting people. Heterosexuals reserve the right to be in miserable marriages that end in divorce.

What gets me is that g ays are often critisized by the conservatie right for being promiscuous, yet when two of them want to make a commitment to monogamy and get married, that same conservative right gets all up in arms. They should be thrilled that same sex couples want to get married. Heck, with how rampant 'shacking up' is, the conservative right should be thrilled with anyone who still chooses marriage instead of all those other immoral alternatives.

...Heck, with how rampant 'shacking up' is, the conservative right should be thrilled with anyone who still chooses marriage instead of all those other immoral alternatives.
The problem is that NOT EVEN THE CONSERVATIVE LEADERS seem to be "thrilled" to be married.

Now it's MY TURN to upset people...

At the rate that couples divorce, on both sides of the political party lines, I'm beginning to think that marriage, as a whole, is a crock of c***. I've seen straight couples who have married for convienience purposes--whether it's money, health insurance, etc. (not for love, children, or the REST of the reasons most zealots put forward for marriage).

I would actually PREFER homosexual couples to marry for one specific reason...I DO NOT WANT TO MARRY A HOMOSEXUAL BY MISTAKE!!! I DO NOT want to end up with someone PRETENDING to be straight, only to find out YEARS later (after having children) that they were homosexual.

I prefer people to be the way that they are meant to be. If someone is meant to be homosexual, you can't force them to pretend to be something that they aren't. (Well, you could force them...until they can't take it anymore, then it ALL FALLS APART).

Also, I have to ask, why are straight people so scared that homosexuals might get married? Are they afraid that their spouse will 'jump the fence?' It's not like people are asking STRAIGHT people to marry someone of the same sex. OR, is it that they want to stop a family member from marrying a person of the same sex because if that member DIES, they want to be able to sweep in and take their property and sell it?

Personally, I think marriage is more about 'money' than it is about 'love.' If it were about 'love', it would be about a joining of two consenting adults. It's about 'property'--'owning' one another (before it was just about a man 'owning' a woman), and sharing each other's things.

But, that's just my opinion.

The issue here is the people of California voted in 2000 that marriage is between a man and a woman. The California Supreme Court decided to (against the will of the people) to say that since the California constitution did not explicity state that marriage is between a man and a woman, that g a y couples have the right to marry. So in order for the will of the people in California to be done, the people in California had to vote to amend the constitution to state that marriage is between a man and a woman.

The "victims" in this were the California people. They had already spoken and it was disregarded by judges that "empathized" instead of ruling by law.

This is not over. I predict that this will eventually end up in the US Supreme Court. It will be an interesting ride and we could eventually have a Federal ruling on this matter.

People can be for g a y rights and not for g a y marriage. The state of California already recognizes civil unions. I am pro-g a y rights but against same-sex marriages.

As for 7 out of 10 Black Californians voting for Prop 8, this is not a surprise to me at all. Most black people are actually people that vote democrats even though their values are more in line with conservatives.

Wouldn't it be great if the soon to be POTUS, Barack Obama, sent a message of hope and the American dream toBlack Americans out there as Brinjnx is hopeful that his getting elected will do? That would be wonderful and inspiring but unfortunately it will not be done. Why? Because then most Black Americans would be voting on the issues and would be more in line with Conservatives. So no, let's keep propagating the myth that the government needs to take care of people because the people can not take care of themselves or the people are owed due to the horrible past of America (I amsincere in saying that the treatment of Blacks in America wasabsolutely horrible - but we have come a long way from slavery).

Oh, and Barack Obama was against same-sex marriage but also against Prop 8. Didn't you hear of this in the media? It was huge! Oh yeah, that is right...there was nothing in the media about how contridactory it is to say you are against same-sex marriage but against Prop 8.
