I just recently got an XM Radio. It is GREAT. I highly recommend you pick one up. You'll never listen to commercial/terrestrial radio ever again. Now that I have officially left it along with the classic rock stations in the dust I came up with a list of the 10 most overplayed songs on classic rock radio stations. Granted, this list may vary depending on geography but it's pretty detailed and based on years of research.

1) "Another Brick In The Wall Part 2"-Pink Floyd (Not one of PF's best songs IMHO yet for some reason this one gets more airplay than all of the others. And why do radio stations choose to ignore the Syd Barrett era altogether?)

2) "Don't Fear The Reaper"-Blue Oyster Cult (I know, I know. "More cowbell." Yeah, that was funny for about 5 minutes. I say "Less Don't Fear The Reaper.")

3) "Stairway To Heaven"-Led Zeppelin (Yes, it's a classic but it gets played so frequently that after awhile you don't appreciate it as much. Plus, I'm starting to think that it's a tad bit overrated and there are other Zep songs that are better. This is one of those songs that I think the djs play when they have to go to the bathroom. I call them "bathroom break" songs since they're usually over 6 minutes long and it gives them a chance to hit the can.)

4) "Radar Love"-Golden Earring (Possibly the most basic bassline ever played for a rock tune. It's not a bad song, but it's not a great one either. There is one brief moment where it gets exciting and that's that brief drum solo in the middle on the long version. Of course, most radio stations play the short, edited version.)

5) "Tom Sawyer"-Rush (Rush is one of those bands that can be defined in 2 eras. Foreigner is another one. Foreigner had the "hard rock" era where their hit songs were driven by catchy guitar riffs and then the "soft rock" era where their hit songs were liked by your math teacher. Rush had the "hard rock" era where Geddy Lee sounded uncannily like Gwen Stefani on "Trapped In A Box" and their songs were more guitar-oriented. Then there was the "synthesizer" era when Geddy Lee's voice dropped down an octave and their songs became more mainstream and laden with synthesizers. "Tom Sawyer" is not one of my favorites and not really a very good song IMHO. I'd rather hear "Anthem" or "Bastille Day" although I'm partial to the "hard rock" era of Rush.)

6) "Hot For Teacher"-Van Halen (Here's another band with 2 eras based on the two lead vocalists. As for Gary Cherone, some things are better left unsaid. Why is it that when bands get a third vocalist it usually means the end? Genesis tried it with Ray Wilson and bombed. Van Halen tried it with Gary Cherone and it bombed. AC/DC would be wise to hang on to Brian Johnson even though he sounds like someone stepping on a cat. The best thing that "Hot For Teacher" had going for it was that it had a hilarious video that is now considered a classic. It's not a bad song, but every time I hear that opening drum solo I cringe. Although I understand that it's Mary Kay Letourneau's favorite song.)

7) "Sweet Home Alabama"-Lynyrd Skynyrd (Trust me, I lived in Alabama for 3 years. It wasn't such a sweet home. Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of those bands custom-made for classic rock radio station because they based so many songs around guitar riffs. If you listen to their hit singles you will find very few, if any, that doesn't have a song built around a catchy guitar riff. About the one thing this song has going for it is that most movies want it for soundtracks-"Forrest Gump", "Con Air", and "Sweet Home Alabama." Go figure.)

8) "Won't Get Fooled Again"-The Who (Another one of those "bathroom break" songs. This one is sadly going to be known as the "CSI: Miami" theme to many people in this country. The Who has some great music and this is a great song, but they are really becoming a commercial band in the sense that their songs are used for tv commercials in addition to tv shows. Remember when "Happy Jack" was used for those Hummer commercials a few years ago? I went to download that song from Napster at the time and the song was actually listed as "The Hummer Song.")

9) "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions"-Queen (Great song, yes, but overplayed to death. And it's sad how Queen's discography is so overlooked by contemporary radio stations. Take a listen to their album "A Night At The Opera" and you'll hear great songs never played on the radio and some of them not sung by Freddie Mercury. Queen is, like the who, a commercial band with this song being used in a forgettable tv commercial for Viagra. Queen is one of those bands who has songs that are known for something other than the band. "We Are The Champions" was associated with the "Revenge of the Nerds" movie prior to becoming a commercial for Viagra. "Under Pressure"'s opening bass intro makes some people think it's "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is forever synonymous with "Wayne's World." And as for "Body Language", well, that one is even more forgettable than the Viagra commercial.)

10) "Every Breath You Take"-The Police (I'm a huge fan of The Police and this is a very good song, but it's not their best IMHO. It's not even a very romantic song yet it is often used for people to get married to. What makes it work is the seductive melody and catchy guitar riff (again) and Sting's powerful vocals. But strip it bare and you have a song essentially about a stalker.)

Great thread here are a couple more worth mentioning that immediatley came to mind:

38 Special - "Hold on Losely". For some reason classic rock stations love this song, I really haven't figured out why. It's not really that good of a song.

Van Morrison - "Brown Eyed Girl". Not even in the top 10 best Van Morrison songs, not that you'd know it by classic rock station standards.

The Eagles - "Hotel California". This is hands down the most overatted song / band there is. I know the Eagles have a lot of fans, but I really dislike this band.

Thin Lizzy - "The boys are back in town". Oh are they? Hopefully not in my town.

BTO - "Ain't seen nothing yet". Me neither. Quite frankly I haven't heard anything else from you yet either. At least not on a classic rock station.

I'm with you on "Hotel California". Great song, but overplayed to death. And don't even get me started on that awful "unplugged" version that gets played on some radio stations.

"Takin' Care Of Business" is the other song by BTO they play on classic rock radio.

Thin Lizzy had some good albums and other songs that never get played on American radio stations. It's either "Boys Are Back In Town" or "Jailbreak." Rarely will you hear "Whiskey In The Jar" which most people think is a Metallica song.

I don't know how I forgot Takin' Care of Business. Add that to the list, it gets played constantly.

On a side note, is it just me or does every Classic Rock station in the world have a DJ that just has to "Get the Led out!!" at least once a day?

And don't forget the song that's on every Classic Rock station's playlist - Free Bird. Agree wholeheartedly about "Ain't Seen Nothing Yet"...and on my classic rock station, I can be guaranteed a playing of Foreigner's "Cold as Ice".

Willing to sacrifice our love? Oh yes, "Cold as Ice" is a staple, allthough if you are lucky enough you may get some "Juke Box Hero" stars in his eyes!

Well, when Clearchannel Communicationswas allowed to buy up half the radio stations in the country, they also dictated the playlists.

I miss the old days when DJs played what they wanted to play within the context of the station's format (Rock radio had everything from Oldies to Metal in one day depending on who was on duty). Now every stationhas a "rock radio's greatest hits" CD.

I bought a Classic Rock Gold 2-CD thing a while back and I swear it was either built from radio playlists or the local station was using that as their playlist. Frampton, Foreigner, Golden Earring, Nugent, Boston, etc etc - same songs in the same order.
