Good advice and song suggestions from everyone. I really enjoy getting the woman's perspective on romantic guitar songs and what makes their toes curl.

I like the advice to keep it simple, sweet, and just play because you know it backwards and forwards. Also avoid the guitar face such as when you make a mistake.

To paraphrase another well known saying, one mutilated song wipes out all the attaboys.

Based on the varied responses and styles received so far, I believe you're right. Get to know them and their musical tastes, then learn a song that will make it more personal for them.

Personally, I'd be impressed by anything by David Bowie. To me, his music evokes a sense of passion and intelligence. Plus he's a classic.

Of course, that's a biased opinion because I'm a huge fan of his. But he's not for everyone.

Do you know what kind of music your lady friend likes? You should try to play some of her favorites!

Or... be unpredictable and go with a crazy headbangin' 80s hair band ballad! It'll be unexpected and FUNNY! (Try something by Dio, LOL) Don't do this if you want to be serious and romantic, though!

I'd recommend learning songs by the Magnetic Fields. The melodies are usually simple (with a lot of variety in range, if you're singing-impaired) and the lyrics range from maudlin to irreverent to provocative. Especially fun selections include:

100,000 Fireflies

Love is Like a Bottle of Gin

The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side

The Book of Love

For We are the King of the Boudoir

Sorry, I've been offline for about a week.

TIme in a Bottle - Jim Croce

I saw the Eagles in concert when they rebuilt Mile Hile Stadium in Denver.

Gonna get on YouTube and check out all these suggestions. Thanks!

Just for the record, the song "And I Love Her" by the Beatles was originally sung by underrated singer, Esther Phillips ( "And I Love Him"). If you go to You Tube and click on her name, there is a video whereThe Beatles introduce her and give her credit for the original version of the song. You also get tohear her version, in a voice that might not be everyone's taste, but which Ihappen to love.

Another song that comes to mind for me is "Me and Bobby McGhee" by the late Janis Joplin, only because I've listened to itseveral times on CD in the last week.

Also, Bob Marley's "Redemption Songs" as sung by Cassandra Wilson - not neccesarily a romantic song, but hauntingly beautiful.

I always had this stupid dream that some day someone would actually fall in love with me, and that I would be just what they were looking for. I realize now that was stupid of me to ever hope for anything like that, but I always thought it would be so nice if someone really and truly loved me, and they would sing "You are the woman that I always dreamed of" by Firefall.

Alright, now the entire internet world knows my deep dark secret.
