No. 2? Really? Surprising. I've never heard of anyone who prefers No. 2 over No. 3, myself included.
Interesting, I know quite a few people who prefer No. 2 to No. 3. I personally cannot decide between the two. I love the fireworks from the 3rd, but the main theme from the 2nd is one of the greatest themes ever composed.. Rachmaninoff even brought it back to close out the 3rd concerto. I almost consider the two concertos as a six-movement conglomerate because of that.. lol

Anyone here besides me play either of these concertos? I would love to talk more about it..

A long running thread.

Like a few others, I grew up on classical. Sorta couldn't stand it because that's what the old folks listened to. Yet it seems to have stuck with me. I find I know peices by sound not by name , if that makes sense.

One name that did stick is Peer Gent's King of the Mountian Hall. I seem to think it's from *War*? Now I'll have to google it to be sure.

But who wouldn't love Bach's air on a G string? Barber's adagio? Pachabels canon in D has been over used. But some guy on youtube does a version on electric gtr. Sounds awesome. I would not have thought such a thing possible.

Umm, that would be, "In The Hall Of The Mountain King” by Peer Gynt.

Actually Edvard Grieg is the composer of the Peer Gynt suites; Hall of the Mountain King is part of the suites.

Your post made me look in Wiki, and I found that the suites were written as "incidental music" to Henrik Ibsen's play "Peer Gynt". Mr. Gynt apparently was a satire on the Norwegian personality ... a "life based on avoidance". Will have to dig that out and read it (of Norwegian extraction, slightly avoidant by nature!).

Didn't know all that! I love the music...

Hi! Just wondering if anyone on eHarmony likes to listen to, or plays classical music ?

Kim
Yes!
Bach, Schumann and Debussy to name a few, and I've played quite a bit of the piano

I absolutely love Barber's Adagio, and Bach's Air for the G string. It would be a funny twist of fate if I used Pachabel's Canon in D at my wedding!

Chawks-I'll join you on the odd bench...

I have been a local symphony season ticket holder for almost 30 years. We've had the good fortune to have had wonderful conductors and an active volunteer organization (of which I am also a part) thats kept this symphony going, season after season.
And since I am a season ticket holder, I often suggest this as a 3rd or so date, just to see what the guy will say. Most have never been to a classical concert and are often totally blown away at how riveting they can be.

I also go to as many rock concerts live as I can get to-outside when the weather clears up or in the concert hall when it's raining. Everyone from Crosby, Stills & Nash, to Bonnie Raitt &Taj Mahal, to The Moody Blues and though they cancelled, darn it, Bully Joel and Elton John and on and on have been in town this year-a wonderful season for concerts!

I love Bluegrass, Zydeco, R & B, some older Heavy Metal--just pretty omniverous when it comes to music I guess.

My grandkids say my iPod is neurotic because of all the different kinds of music on it-but they knw I'll buy tickets and take them to whatever new band they want to see.

haha you just reminded me that my sister wants me to play the organ at her wedding. I have to keep reminding her that I do not play the organ, but she insists, "It is just like a piano, but with more pedals!" I told her, "Only if I get to play Bon Jovi's 'It's My Life' as your bridal march." I think it perfectly describes her..

I've been on a significant rock kick for the past six months or so. It is very liberating to play a little Elton, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Journey, Fogerty (Creedence Clearwater Revival), etc. Some people think it sacreligious or blasphemous that I will play these great songs, and then switch and play Rachmaninoff or Liszt. I find it very liberating and fun. Anyone else share that sentiment?

Nice! I've got one vote!

Do you play at all? I used to be a long-standing member at the pianoworld forums, but tendonitis and carpal tunnel forced me to step away, since I am hoping to make a living as a writer. (As such, I will probably not have the strongest presence here.. but definitely am too social not to say hi.)
