Up a little late and I'm off tomorrow! Yes!

I'm relatively new here so this topic might have been discussed at some point. I am a rock and folk rock fan. I not only love great music, but great lyrics as well. My tastes (in music and lyrics) range from Dylan and Springsteen, to early Elton John/Bernie Taupin, Jackson Browne, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Rush, and Green Day (specifically the album "American Idiot" - yeah, I learned about them from my 20 year old son). Who are the greatest rock and folk rock lyricists and what are their best lyrics?

Thanks for the tips about good lyrics. I've at least heard of two of the artists you list - Smith and Mann - but I've never really listened to them. I tend to like my lyrics with a bit of a social bite to them.

When no one responded to this topic I had a couple of thoughts: 1) uh oh, no one here can read, or 2) I've somehow been transported back to the era of disco and hair bands when 12 year olds were writing lyrics.

Maybe I should have asked "What are your favorite lyrics?" However, I might have gotten a flood of gibberish from Spice Girls, Van Halen, and Kool and the Gang....

I think I'm going to check out some of the newer artists. I'm a bit stuck in the past :-) My son appreciates really good lyrics, but his tastes run toward straight ahead punk tinged rock (which is ok). Mohair, are these rock artists, folk, folk-rock, or other?

Aside from the fact that you should be thrashed for lumping Van Halen in with the Spice Girls... Jim Morrison is one of the all time greats.

I submit:

"Before you slip into unconciousness, I'd like to have another kiss. Another flashing chance at bliss, another kiss. Another kiss."

and

"Let's swim to the moon, uh huh
Let's climb through the tide
Penetrate the evening
That the city sleeps to hide
Let's swim out tonight, love
It's our turn to try
Parked beside the ocean
On our moonlight drive."

That isthe tip of the iceberg that is his genius.

Hahaha...yes, I did make a leap by placing Van Halen in the same sentence with the Spice Girls...ouch! oooh, that hurts! Consider me thrashed. Morrison was a strange cat, but as far as Morrison goes, I like:

The human race was dyin' out.
Noone left to scream and shout.
People walking on the moon.
Smog will get you pretty soon.
Everyone was hanging out.
Hanging up and hanging down.
Hanging in and holding fast.
Hope our little world will last.

or

I wanna tell you 'bout Texas Radio and the Big Beat
Comes out of the Virginia swamps
Cool and slow with plenty of precision
With a back beat narrow and hard to master
Some call it heavenly in it's brilliance
Others, mean and ruthful of the Western dream

Billy Corgan

"i've faced the fathoms in your deep
withstood the suitors quiet siege
pulled down the heavens just to please you
appease you
the wind blows, and I know

I can't go on digging roses from your grave
to linger on beyond the beyond
where the willows weep and the whirlpools sleep
you'll find me"

I have to agree with GaryZ about the Van Halen comment. DO NOT insult Eddie and the boys! I personally think that Bob Seger has some fantastic lyrics. I have heard him referred to as "The Poor Man's Poet," whatever that means. As far as a singer/songwriter/all around great musician, I would also have to list Brian McKnight. He has written a lot for other people as well.
