This might be me getting too technical for my own good, but I noticed someone posted a post...what else would they do with a post...regarding how Conor Oberst was a part of Bright Eyes. I just wanted to point out that Bright Eyes was his first project, but all the music recorded, instrumentally and vocally was himself. Not that he was in a band, he was the band. But I will agree with Conor as a great musician to look into.

Oh, and if you have a sense of humor, look into James Moyer Franks' lyrics. By far one of the best, if not the best lyricist, of our generation.

Here are just a few of my many favorites:

The Beatles/John Lennon

There are many versions of Across the Universe, but I prefer the clean acoustic version YouTube - The Beatles- Across The Universe ("Let It Be... Naked" remix) and the more psychedelic version from Anthology 2 YouTube - The Beatles - Across The Universe [HQ] Take2 1968 Version long

Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me

Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe

Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life
are ringing through my open ears
exciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which
shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe

Smashing Pumpkins/Billy Corgan

YouTube - Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans - Smashing Pumpkins

As far as you take me, that's where I believe
The realm of soft delusions, floating on the leaves
On a distant shoreline, she waves her arms to me
As all the thought police, are closing in for sleep
The dilly dally, of my bright lit stay
The steam of my misfortunes
Has given me the power to be afraid
And in my mind I'm everyone

In the slipstream, of thoughtless thoughts
The light of all that's good, the light of all that's true
To the fringes gladly, I walk unadorned
With gods and their creations
With filth and disease
Porcelina, she waits for me there
With seashell hissing lullabyes
And whispers fathomed deep inside my own
Hidden thoughts and alibis
My secret thoughts come alive

Without a care in this whole world
Without a care in this life
It's what you take that makes it right
And in my mind I'm everyone
In my mind I'm everyone of you

Porcelina of the oceans blue

Nirvana/Kurt Cobain

YouTube - Nirvana - All Apologies (MTV Unplugged)

What else should I be?
All apologies
What else could I say?
Everyone is gay
What else could I write?
I don't have the right
What else should I be?
All Apologies

In the sun
In the sun I feel as one
In the sun
In the sun
Married
Buried

I wish I was like you
Easily amused
Find my nest of salt
Everything's my fault
I'll take all the blame
Aqua seafoam shame
Sunburn with freezer burn
Choking on the ashes of her enemy

In the sun
In the sun I feel as one
In the sun
In the sun
Married
Buried

All in all is all we all are

Anyone mention Neil Young? I love his songs because many of them tell a story with lyrics so vivid you can imagine the scene in your head.

First bit of Sugar Mountain:

Oh to live on Sugar Mountain...with the barkers and the colored balloons. You can't be twenty on Sugar Mountain, though your thinking that your leaving there too soon. Your leaving there to soon.

Anyway...he's great!

+1, and HOW!!

One of my faves is "Powderfinger", the meaning of which is so open to individual interpretation as to be like the end of Stanley Kubrick's movie, 2001.

wow I know this thread is dead but I can't let it die out without some honorable mensions that were not listed here, wow so disappointed.

Eddie Vedder - Pearl Jam

Zack de la Rocha - Rage Against The Machine (the most political band EVAR!)

Gordon Downie - The Tragically Hip

Jeff Martin - The Tea Party

Peter Townsend - The Who

Chino Moreno - Deftones

Okay.. now it can die and I'll be happy.

Powderfinger! Yes, agree! Used to listen to it over and over. I had it on a tape cassette (yep, I'm that old) Haven't heard it for years. I think it was about some kid getting shot. Sad, but awesome story and lyrics. Neil's one of the best storyteller/lyricist. Not much of a singer, range is limited, but top notch song writer.
