Lenigrade Cowboys & Red Army Choir from 1993 Total Balalajka Show; and as I right Oh, Field on my laptop. Wonderful. Note the foot movement. So Cool!

A really interesting album called The Minimal Wave Tapes: Vol. 1. It's a compilation of early New Wave pioneers that never made it big (unlike, say, Gary Numan or Depeche Mode). Found it on Napster.

Put fresh cds into the car's changer this morning:
38 Counts of Battery by Pig Destroyer - a compilation of their early EPs & 1st LP. Great DC area death/grind band

Synchestra by The Devin Townsend Band - as I mentioned earlier I'm on a big DT kick (including the SYL below). This is a cool mix of prog, folk & metal.

Dead or Dreaming by Into Eternity - Prog/Melodeath from Regina, Canada. I'm more a fan of their later stuff w/Stu Block, but I always like to start at the beginning when going through band's catalogs and the vocal layering is cool spread out amongst all the band members.

Crack the Skye by Mastadon - I think most people know this one. I don't like it as much as Leviathan of Blood Mountain but it's still my number 3 or 4 album of '09 (Baroness' Blue record & Converge's Axe to Fall are 1 & 2)

Beyond the Permafrost by Skeletonwitch - of all the many new bands in the recent Thrash revival, these guys are my second favorite behind right behind Evile. I like the mix of Black with Thrash.

Strapping Young Lad by Strapping Young Lad - A good all around angry album with Devin's usual tongue in cheek approach to metal. Not as good as City, Alien or The New Black, but still a good listen.

Changing up what's in the car:
Prowler in the Yard by Pig Destroyer - a concept album of sorts about a High School Romance turned break-up this horrible, horrible horrible consequences likely to end up on the 11 o'clock news, but after all it is death/grind.

Ki by The Devin Townsend Project - this is the 1st of 4 planned cds under Dev's current solo plan. This cd is also brand new to me, much more mellow than any of his other work (well maybe not his 2 ambient-only albums) but neither as light-hearted or as heavy as Synchestra was with DTB. Good background noise.

Beyond Oblivion by Into Eternity - 3rd disc with their 3rd singer. Better than Dead or Dreaming but not as good comapred to the 2 that follow. Still worth it for their brand of extreme prog/melodeath.

Onset of Putrifaction by Necrophagist - While I think both the album & band name will scare off anyone not in the "know" about Muhammed Suicimez, it's one of the most talented works in music period to say little of its own presence in tech death metal. The updated/redone drum programming compliment all the rest of the amazing guitar work and it was all done as a solo work. Plus the classical music influences, though not as overt as the follow up, are impressive.

Breathing the Fire by Skeletonwitch - latest release by blackened thrashers. I think I like this one more than Beyond the Permafrost. A great thrasher.

Alien by Strapping Young Lad - Probably the second best SYL album after City and the one I got into them with. Like everything SYL it's fast, heavy, and tounge in cheek.

Also started getting back into Fear Factory, what with the new and semi-controversial album coming out (which in keeping with my recent listening also happens to feature 1/2 of Strapping Young Lad).

Right now, I'm listening to a VERY twisted song, "Time To Pretend" by a group called MGMT.

I'm feeling rough, I'm feeling raw, I'm in the prime of my life.
Let's make some music, make some money, find some models for wives.
I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin, and f*** with the stars.
You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars.

This is our decision, to live fast and die young.
We've got the vision, now let's have some fun.
Yeah, it's overwhelming, but what else can we do.
Get jobs in offices, and wake up for the morning commute.

Forget about our mothers and our friends
We're fated to pretend
To pretend
We're fated to pretend
To pretend

I'll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms
I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world
I'll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home
Yeah, I'll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone.

There's really nothing, nothing we can do
Love must be forgotten, life can always start up anew.
The models will have children, we'll get a divorce
We'll find some more models, everything must run it's course.

We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end
We were fated to pretend
To pretend
We're fated to pretend
To pretend

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
