As 2012 is now upon us I think now is as good a time as any to post our favorite releases from the previous year whether you can narrow it down to a top 5 or 10 or just want to list anything and everything from 2011 in music you just loved (re-releases don't count though...) whether it'll be garnering any awards or you think they should be in whatever order you choose.

I'm still ordering my thoughts in these regards but no reason the rest of you shouldn't have at it.

Edit: Here's my Top plus honorable mentions. The top 3 are as they should be, everything else falls in whatever order I am trying to remember them in.

1). Heritage by Opeth - As I may have mentioned in the "What Are You Listening To" thread there is immediate bias towards this release but dang it if it wasn't the best album of the year as far as I am concerned. Yes, completely shut myself off from any spoilers and was thus shocked at absolutely ZERO death metal on the album, but like everyone who listened it is just perfect as far as a Prog Rock/Metal album should be. Anyone who doesn't listen to metal (or even like metal) will like this album.

2). Ghost/Deconstruction by The Devin Townsend Project - This is a tie, you can't really put one down over the other despite being two completely different albums. Decon has been getting picked as a #1 by a lot of metal lists (only being beat by Opeth and Mastodon) but Ghost stands right alongside it as far as musicianship and songwriting is concerned. The only other mix of New Wave/Prog that comes close is the new Cynic.

3).Omnivium by Obscura - Best technical metal album of the year. Brilliant lyrics, even more brilliant instrument playing.

The Rest:
Carbon-Based Anatomy by Cynic - as biased as I am, the fact that this EP was 3 real tracks and 3 ambient filler tracks (they were good, but Devin Townsend beat them at that with Ghost as a whole) kept it just outside my top 3.

WT!? by KMFDM - Great solid album. I liked it a lot better than their last 2.

Beating Dead Horses by 16Volt - Probably my favorite industrial release of the year if not for a brand new discovery I made at a concert this year. That said such a solid release.

Mother Ignorance by Army Of The Universe - The aforementioned discovery. Not as harsh as other industrial rock, I really recommend them to anyone and everyone. Especially if you happen to like Die Krupps.

The Hunter by Mastodon - Another top 3 contender, I was little turned off by their decision to turn in a less heavy and non-concept release. It's still one of the best metal albums of the year and I think I would otherwise say this competes for my #4 spot.

The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues by Between The Buried & Me - Would tie with Mastodon for #4. Also an EP but it's 30 minutes of solid music and in true BTBAM fashion fit everything in under the sun. As a prequel to their upcoming full length (of which this is part 1 of a 2 part concept) I cannot wait for the full release.

A Dramatic Turn Of Events by Dream Theater - I think they lost nothing from Mike Portnoy's exit and put out their best album in a decade. Easily ties for #4 alongside the other two #4 contenders.

Sounds Of A Playground Fading by In Flames - One of my 2 comeback albums of the year. They lived up to the promise originally made with Come Clarity and did so without founder Jesper Stromblad, really showing off Bjorn's songwriting and getting some though not all of the old sound back.

Carnival Is Forever by Depacitated - Another comeback of the year candidate, because quite frankly to comeback to losing half the band in a car accident (particularly the death of drummer Vitek) is a lot tougher than losing a single member which many other bands (like Evile and their newest release) have done as well.

The Unseen Empire by Scar Symmetry - Mainly because this album finally vindicates Roberth & Lars's efforts taking over for Christian which many still haven't gotten over. One of their best albums and a concept album to boot.

Ritual by The Black Dahlia Murder - Flies under the radar because of a lot of other releases this year but they really stepped up their game.

Honorable Mentions - Blunt Force Trauma by Cavalera Conspiracy, Weightless by Animals As Leaders, Five Serpents Teeth by Evile, Made In Germany by Rammstein (a push against my own rules because it's a best of, but the brand new single Mein Land on it is great), Voir Dire by Will Haven, In Waves by Trivium, Beast by DevilDriver, Surtur Rising by Amon Amarth, Diotima by Krallice, Dualism by Textures, Kairos by Sepultura
