Curious as to what my fellow music lovers would choose for the most beautiful rock ballads ever? It goes without saying this list is purely subjective. Here's my top 5 - subject to change:

1. Expecting to Fly - Neil Young with Buffalo Springfield
Not many have heard of this song but it is absolutely lovely. Lush and dreamlike with lyrics speaking of regrets over a past love.

2. Across the Universe - the Beatles
I think of myself walking in a park after a fresh spring rain. Just very peaceful.

3. Thank You - Led Zeppelin
The big boys of early metal really toned it down with this ballad. Speaks of undying love.

4. Lady Jane - Rolling Stones
Love the dulcimer in this song. I picture the middle ages with a prince singing to his lady.

5. God Only Knows - Beach Boys

I realize this list is all from the 60's and 70's, but it is my favorite era of music. I also like November Rain by Guns and Roses and Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley.

Yellow Ledbetter. Go figure, another Pearl Jam reference from me. The best part is whenever its played live the lyrics are never ever the same, always some variation of the same basic story which goes as follows: *taken from wikipedia and verified for accuracy*

Regarding the song, Vedder said in an online chat that it was written around the time of the Gulf War, and added that "it's an anti-patriotic song, actually." On August 7, 2008, at a solo performance in Newark, New Jersey at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Vedder took a question from the audience requesting that he explain the meaning of "Yellow Ledbetter". At first, Vedder joked, saying, "Wait...you mean there's lyrics?" He went on to talk about how the song took as its subject a friend of his from Seattle whose brother (Tim Ledbetter) served in the first Gulf War. His friend received a "yellow letter" in the mail informing him that his brother had died in the war. Vedder and his friend then went for a walk. On this walk, the friend, whom Vedder described as "alternative-looking," happened by a house with an American flag flying, and people on the porch. He stopped and gestured to the flag, as if to salute it, however the people on the porch glared at him disapprovingly due to his appearance.
