So the thread on vinyl has me thinking, any audiophiles out there?

While sinking a lot of money into equipment is definitely a hobby for those with the wallets to stomach the process, I do believe that everyone should at least make the investment into one or two pairs of quality headphones as they do make a significant difference over what you hear and how you hear it.

For example I've owned for years a pair of Grado SR-60s, which while their lowest end product (I plan to upgrade them at some point, maybe to 125s) and have enjoyed them over many other cans I've tried and certainly over the pack-ins that long came with cd & mp3 players.

More recently I sunk some money into a pair of Monster Turbine Copper Pros as IEMs to replace the buds I was using with my iPhone. This probably the one product from Monster I have ever heard glowing reviews for and after a decent play-in, running them through a battery of tests from latin jazz, jazz fusion metal & industrial (to really test the bass punch) I've been very satisfied. I also like that they gave me a hojillion tips to try to create a better seal for isolation and allow me to keep the volume a lot lower as well.

Why headphones? Do you think the sound is better on headphones, or are you just trying not to annoy housemates/neighbors?

I used to have an electric piano in an apartment and I used headphones for that but other than that I've never used them.

Nope. Not me. After having been married to a musician/audiophile, I run from them as potential dates.

To each their own. For me, I'm perfectly happy with the radio that came with my car, and the intercom radio/stereo in my house.

I chose headphones as they're an investment everyone can make as opposed to shelling out for amps, preamps, head ends and speakers which can really break the bank (well so can headphones) and there is a very noticeable difference in sound with a good pair.

I for one do use mine both to limit annoying others and because yes, with the right pair I do get a better sound that just through speakers in many cases. The grados I own are mainly for the later, they're open cans that actually leak sound so while I get get great sound out of them everyone else gets a taste too which isn't always welcome, but for sub $100 they're a great buy. On the other hand, using closed ear cans or IEMs (In-Ear Monitors) depending on make/model and seal you get better sound imo without having to crank up the volume and damage one's hearing.

Granted sound can be subjective, but from a pair of $15 skullcandy's or say the apple pack-in ear buds there are options out there that do sound a lot better, have better construction and will last longer without even having to break $100.

Interesting! I will probably get new stereo equipment at some point as mine is pretty decrepit and it had not occurred to me to think about headphones in place of massively expensive speakers. Good point.

This is probably a stupid question but are there wireless headphones? It would be nice not to be attached to anything. :-)

Yes, wireless headphones do exist.. I've never used any myself, but I know there are several options available such as from Sennheiser. I would highly recommend looking into a pair, and if you can find a store where you can test them mores the better.

If you are up for researching, I would recommend skimming through head-fi.org. It's a massive forum dedicated to all things made for listening and while the technical jargon goes over my head at times, it's the best place for reviews and opinions. They helped me make my decision to sink $250 (marked down from $300 but paid for with tax return money anyhow) on the IEMs I currently own.
