Anybody out there still listening to vinyl? I am wanting to go back to vinyl, because there are somethings that I want that never made it to CD, and I also miss the sound of a record playing.

Some techies seem to think vinyl is superior to digital anyway, because the record represents the analog version of the sound wave, where as digital's binary code (zeros and ones) are not an actual representation of the sound wave. Meaning, you lose something in the music when it's all digitalized. Don't know if that is true or not, but I'm just wanting to get back into collecting vinyl.

Anybody here care to give me advice on a good turntable to get? Something that isn't extremely expensive, but something I can get a good sound out of. Thanks in advance!

My old linear tracking turntable bit the dust a few years back and I've been contemplating getting another one. Digital sampling has improved in the years since CD's were first introduced and *can* sound quite good if care is taken in the recording and mastering process. For me, I still enjoy the warmth of an analog recording played back through an analog medium.

I do have a small vinyl collection that I add to when I find something I've really been looking for mainly KMFDM and Misfits singles.

Sorry for getting back to this thread kind of late! I think the problem with compact disc recordings nowadays is that the engineers who are mastering the albums are getting into what they call the "loudness wars". I think because of that, many are finding favor in vinyl again...especially the older stuff that was recording during vinyl's heyday. I know I have been reading a lot of different forums about analog VS digital. Some of it was a bunch of digital engineer speak which was way over my head. Some of it made sense, some of it was opposite from what I've hear in terms of how digital recordings capture the soundbytes. I know I'm no expert with music, but there is something about the warmth and the "realness" of music on vinyl as opposed to music on a compact disc or a mp3. Can't quite put my finger on it. I guess it's just more interesting to me. Certainly the vinyl packages are more exciting. Bigger artwork, some packages that opens up like a book. To me, listening to vinyl is more less like an event rather than simply pushing play on a CD player.

Greg, what's your address? I will send you my turntable! LOL

My old stereo still has a working turntable on the top (at least, I think it works... haven't used it in years). And, I still have a stash of old LPs and 45's that I keep mostly for nostalgia purposes. I will probably keep the turntable as long as it works, just in case I ever wanted to bust out the old 70's K-Tel compilation records.

I can picture you and your friends sitting down in your mom's basement listening to Dark Side Of The Moon...

I still have all my old LPs (60's, 70's mostly). My last turntable died a few years ago and I do plan to get another at some point. My records are, um, used so I'm not too concerned about getting the best possible equipment ... it's gonna be noisy anyway. But I would think if you're dealing with collector's quality records, there might be some machines that are easier on aging vinyl?

My dad had a collection of 78's from the 30's-40's (I think) jazz. I don't know what happened to it; wish I did!

I have also heard that: analog sound is better. I wonder if that's true, for the average ear? I have extremely good pitch but I'm not sure I'd hear the subtleties of analog vs digital. I do like the whole (ahem) ambience of vinyl though, plus these LPs were part of my youth, I remember getting them, listening to them 100's of times, etc.

I think the notion that vinyl sounds superior to a CD is horse hockey. Unless you like hiss, snaps and skips, a CD is vastly superior. No one with normal ears can tell any sort of "superiority" in a vinyl recording.

Now, bringing out the LPs can be fun and make for a nice nostalgia break, but please don't think you're listening to something superior.

While Greg does make a point about the growing "loudness wars" that's not tied to cds alone and would still effect the newer vinyl records being put out today. What does make a difference regardless of format is the advancement in production techniques and the producers themselves. Vinyl to me, is something more of either a nostalgia effort like you say or more as a collector thing (ie I just pre-ordered the new Devin Towsend Project releases and happened to spring for the version that comes with a 7" as part of the bundle), it's not going to be an optimized format for listening.

Truly getting a superior listening experience is going to be more born from personal enjoyment, whether that means sinking a ton of money into better audio equipment, formats (ie if you want to split hairs anything not encoded as a FLAC file is likely inferior by today's standards...but who has the hard drives to hold them all....) or not is still all boiling down to personal preference.

I have replaced a lot of my old LP's with CD's/mp3's, and even when I listen to the digitized version on my iPOD, mentally, I can still hear the "skip" where it "should be" in my old record.

That's funny!

One thing I liked about the LP (and CD world) was the "concept album". That's gotten diluted, with mp3 and track-skipping etc. It was too much trouble to skip tracks with LPs!
